Spring Creek, Center County, 8/24/2003

Arrived at Benner Spring section yesterday around 7:30 AM, water was slightly off color and a cool 60 degrees,. The reported Trico hatch was non existent. I did, however, land two brookies on a size 20 trico. Fooled three more on a #18 ant pattern. Fished until 11:30 or so.

I haven't fished this section for about two years and wasn't aware if the "stream improvements". I am not a fan of removing overhanging vegetation and installing logs along the bank,.

I too have caught brook trout in Spring Creek, but it was several decades ago. I also caught a very large 20"+ rainbow out of one of it's feeder streams at that time. Where they came from is anyones guess. That being said, browns were always the predominent catch.

Be ready to be trashed. You couldn't possibly know what a Brook Trout looks like and couldn't have caught one in Spring Creek! Sarcasm intended.

I've caught small brookies in Spring but, this is about 15 years ago. I've seen 2 very large brookies in the paradise section around the time as well (probably escapees). Haven't caught any in a long time though, mostly browns and the occasional rainbow these days.

I randomly catch wild bows at a certain area on spring creek way upstream of any hatchery, caught these 2 today, the pic of the bigger fish doesn't do it justice it was very vibrant

In the 1980s and 1990s there were no wild rainbows in Spring Creek despite the fact that there are two PFBC hatcheries on the stream, and that enormous numbers of rainbow trout were stocked over about a century.

People who live around here know where those rainbows came from. They were stocked by a private party. and spread from there. But they haven't spread all over Spring Creek, at least not yet. As he said, they are in a "certain area" of Spring Creek.

Tell that to the Cumberland valley(trindle, cedar, hoagestown run.

I’ve watched all 3 of those get significantly worse in the past 10 yrs. 1 of them took a real turn for the worse. 1 of them only has two pockets of fish and they seem to have disappeared. The same one is filled with trash. Literally.
