Recent Rain

Wettest May to date at (Harrisburg) HIA. I'm sure that may true for many other measuring stations as well. Given recent dry conditions, I can't say I'm upset about this. The rain has been incremental enough to be very beneficial to the aquifers!

I use the https://www.raindrop.farm/ app to get the amount of rain at my home, or just about anywhere you want, almost instantly.

The Weather Underground webpage offers other parameters besides rainfall amounts using personal weather stations (PWS) like mine and other PWS linked to their and other networks like NOAA. Possibly RainDrop does the same thing...

However, IF they aren't using mostly PWS data, it can't be as accurate in all areas because my PWS and a few others in my immediate area get different rainfall amounts all the time and not because the PWS data isn't accurate or calibrated.

FWIW - We also get different snowfall amounts and temperature variations because of the elevation changes in this area.

The simple way to test the accuracy is use to Weather Underground to locate a PWS on their map and compare rainfall amounts with the same location on RainDrop.

I’m elated. The gardens look great; and the local fishing has been good; and the temps have been quite favorable for hiking and biking. When the creeks are high at this time f the year it’s a perfect time to shift to lake fly fishing for bluegill and crappie. And each time the Jordan comes down one has to be concerned that a couple of hot days will cook the goose, but with repeated storm events we get a few days of good fishing, the stream approaches moderately low conditions, and then a new storm comes along, adding flow and buffering the stream temp against a few days of hot weather if and when they occur..

May was wet around the Commonwealth but how about June? We'll see... Next week 's precip chances look to be associated with storms ahead of cold front. CPC day8-14 outlook favors above average precipitation.
I've enjoyed the rain. It keeps the fair weather fishermen off the crick. Haven't caught a ton on dries but the nymphing and wet fly fishing has been exceptionally good to me.

I've used that or something similar recently in the past, but I'm very skeptical as to how accurate it could be.
I have 2 friends that have a rain gauge at their house and live about 2 miles west of me. Most mornings for the past several months when it has rained the day before we’ve compared the rainfall in their rain gauge to what’s shown on that website.

The 2 been within +/- 0.02” most of the time. I can’t remember if they were ever as much as 0.05”different. That’s accurate enough for me. When the difference is just a 0.01” or 0.02” dffererence, I always half heartedly joke with them that their gauge may have missed one drop of rain. 😃

FWIW I just read an article where NOAA is predicting an abnormally hot summer starting in June. Hoping that'll warm some of the mountain streams. Since they have good flows, combined with the upcoming heat, should be great conditions. Bring on the heat!

Really? With the polar vortex collapse, I read we were expecting a cooler summer in the northeast. This is from this week:

Well, with weather I guess we really have to just wait and see.

Based on the fact that the forecast for today's weather in my geography changed 5 times since around 10:00 am with the 8:00 am forecast being the closest to reality...

I'm confident in saying, I concur.

FWIW - According to my weather station, there were only 10 days in May with zero precipitation...

I wonder how that compares to the forecasts made in April... 😉

Along with all of the rain we've been getting, it seems like there have been a lot of windy days throughout the month of May as well. Someone mentioned a while back about there being more windy days than usual. I always found the wind to be very annoying.
That be me
Wind is the pits for dry fly fishing
I'd rather fish in rain
