Recent Rain

Often time you just have to fish regardless of the conditions.
You have to change and figure it out the fish are there and they have to eat so why not change it up.
A day fishing is much better than a day working even if you don't catch anything.
The sport is called fishing not catching.

Drowning would be my main concern with fishing Penns (or the other big, popular Central PA streams) right now. Other than Spring. I’d rather work than risk that. And I’d probably rather work than burn a day off to fish Spring.

But yeah, agree generally in principle. Kids have definitely lowered my standards as to what kind of conditions I’ll fish in. Basically anything when my wife says I can go is fine with me now. I’d find a place to fish in these conditions too, but Penns/BFC/LJR/etc won’t be options for me until they get down to more manageable flows. YMMV, and your tolerances for safe wading too, and that’s fine too.

I’ve never fished penns, I have heard it gets extremely warm super fast so that’s a big concern in early June for me. Does penns really stay high for weeks after a good rain? High water sucks and I been fighting spring run off on the Madison. Going back home to see fam around June 1

Looks like more rain coming for Wed and Thurs.
Yes. Generally 1 inch across most of the state with more in places. CPA looking at 2” Wednesday- Thursday.

Water temps should not be a concern anywhere in early June this year - barring some insane heat wave - which does not appear to be in the cards

Penns seems to drop slower than just about any other water in central PA

We are well positioned for a really nice first half of June, if it stops raining.
This weather cycle really reminds me of 68 and 69. We had Lots of rain into late June and then drought in August. We shall see.

After the big rain on the 17th the water flowing out of the cave was muddy. So I don't think it fishes any better than the rest of the stream.

I think @troutbert mentioned the number of sinkholes in Penns Valley being responsible for much of the muddy water of Penns. That's certainly true. Very large on just by the high school. Several other large ones on nearby farms.

Looks like the green drake hatch there may be wiped out this year
But rain is good…..

Jeez. Boo hoo. Your dry fly fishing hasn't been great this year due to the rain. Life goes on. We were experiencing a severe drought in Pennsylvania and we still are in Berks County where I live even after all this rain.

There were wildfires a few miles from my house in the fall. I was worried about my well drying up. The recent rain has helped and I am not as worried anymore. It's nice not having to worry that the woods behind my house could burn down. The rain has been much needed in Pennsylvania. But.... the Green Drake hatch might be a bust this year. Boy this rain sucks.

2 things can be true at the same time. This is a flyfishing discussion board, I don’t think anyone is going onto the paclimatechange forums complaining about the green drake hatch

When did I write about climate change? We are in a damn drought. Rain helps droughts. End of story.

He ended his post by saying "But rain is good….." I'm here to point out that it is good. There is more to life than missing a hatch. I could care less if it affected my fishing when there was a fire burning a few miles from my house due to lack of rain. Pretty easy to understand actually if you were in the situation I was in.

I think a little more understanding and appreciation for both sides of the rain fence is called for here. No matter which side you personally fall on.

I’m certain it won’t be long again before we’re asking for more rain. And not long after that, we’ll be hoping for less. And the cycle repeats.

The extremes (droughts and floods) are never good. For anyone or anything. Fortunately most of the time the needle reads in the middle somewhere.

Short version: Take it easy on each-other guys.

All I have to say is I hope no one here experiences what I experienced with a wildfire so close to home. Nothing else matters in life when you think there is a chance your house may go up in flames. I don't think fishing and the possibility of losing your house to fire is comparable. But what the hell do I know. Carry on.

I also hope you don't have your properties wiped out by 100-year floods, as my family has had happen 3 separate times. Two can play this silly game of guilt tripping.

As others have posted, you are on a fly fishing forum and people are bummed that the entire month of prime hatches is getting wiped out. This is to be expected.
