I thought that already happened when the access was restricted and the stocking ended...??
Dear Bamboozle,

I figured that happened by default and this just formalizes things and makes things official.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I don't know for sure, but I believe the SR area stocking was cancelled, but without an official regulation change. Actual reg changes must be done with notice and include public comment to become official.

The final (April 22) stocking of Section 03 was cancelled (according to the PFBC Stocking Schedule) so the last PFBC fish dump was March 4.

The private stockings by Yellow Breeches Anglers also stopped shortly after the signs went up about the "permits" according to their Facebook page.

In the meantime, I emailed my support of the elimination of the special regulation on Section 03 of the Yellow Breeches to the PFBC at the email address on the link you provided.

Thanks for the info!!

BTW - Has anybody secured a permit and fished or checked out the situation since the permit program began??

Pretty brilliant way to turn that section into the best water in south central PA once the stream bred fish establish. Maybe the trick really is buying up land and putting it into private vs public hands so the PFBC is no longer able to *** it up.
Lest you forget, you will not be able to fish "the best water in south central PA" without a permit. It is private water.

Talked with some experienced rods that were on the Allenberry water since permitting and have great familiarity with the stretch (think guide level experience).

They said there are very, very few fish.

I fished it last summer during white fly hatch and had a very poor result.

I think the mission is at this point is to find the next stretch of YB to be the restricted tackle area. Conversations are happening.

How about they stop stocking the stream altogether instead of taking yet another section and dumping thousands of fish over the existing wild fish

Honestly would still be worth it to keep those habitat butchers and their rubber trash out. I’d rather see a healthy river managed properly that one could occasionally splurge to go fish if need be. Hell maybe the place would become so enormously successful that they’d open it up from time to time.

Zero shot PFBC would ever cop to an actual fisheries improvement especially on a “heritage” waterway. The only lever they know how to pull is more “limited tackle” to control how many people can leave with a creel full of already worthless rubber trout. Sometimes I wonder whether too much polychlorinated biphenyl with their trout sammich could explain the brain function of the people who still ardently support the practice of stocking over wild fish.

That would be absolutely fabulous to let it revert to stream bred fish only and C&R only.

And it has absolutely zero chance of ever happening.

I just saw a post of FB today where they pulled a commercial fishing (dredging) net out of the Yellow Breeches, where poachers were trying to clean out the stream of trout.

It would be a wild brown trout fishery that would rival the major central pa rivers if stocking was ended. No doubt in my mind. Anyone who thinks otherwise clearly hasn’t fished it enough to know what’s already in there despite all the stocking and harvest. But I’d say it’s more likely to catch a 40 inch wild brown trout in PA than it is for stocking to end on the breeches anytime soon. Or ever, for that matter.

It’s okay as it is I guess. It’s always good for a ton of stockies and a good amount of cookie cutter wilds with an occasional rouge larger wild brown. I’d be curious to see what the allenberry stretch will hold in a few years. I always thought with the major spring dumping in upstream it would be prime water for some nice browns. It has some big fish habitat in the form of depth that so much of the breeches seems to be lacking. It’s not like there weren’t a few wild browns in there already, but I almost never caught them unless I was fishing in the fall or winter, long removed from the heavy stocking in the spring.

Trout from a nursery (which are becoming harder to source due to regs), are running about $6 per trout.

They will have a healthy investment , multiple times year, in fish that will swim or wash away over their mile or so stretch.

A couple of things, not necessarily directed at Letort:

There are 4 sections on the Yellow Breeches and all but Section 01 are stocked. If you ever explored Section 01, you know why...

Also, Section 03 (the Catch & Release Allenberry stretch) is BY FAR the shortest section of the stream.

With that in mind, IF:

...the mission is at this point is to find the next stretch of YB to be the restricted tackle area. Conversations are happening.

I have to believe it isn't going to be Section 01, it will be PART of Section 02, or 04. I also think that in line with most PFBC Special Regulation Sections, this would also require re-sectioning Section 02, 04, or both.

I don't know, but I also doubt that in the future, the PFBC allocation of fish previously stocked in Section 03 will automatically be put in Sections 02 & 04 since they already supposedly have enough fish stocked to support the usage PLUS they are still getting additional stockings from Yellow Breeches Anglers.

Is anything is really going to change if they create a Special Regulation on Sections 02 or 04 (which I really doubt will happen except as a PORTION of either of those sections)? Excluding Section 01, the entire stream is already stocked by the PFBC & Yellow Breeches Anglers and if anything, maybe a Catch & Release section gets less fish??

I have no insight and honestly don't care because I don't like the Allenberry enough for food or lodging to stay there so I can fish but...

I think it is only a matter of time until the non-guest fishing permits will have a fee associated with them or disappear entirely and the guest fishing experience becomes an add-on package with a fee, like theatre tickets or meals.

Once that happens, they will have the funding to buy fish and IF the fishing improves enough and they stock some bigger fish or feed them, they will find enough sports willing to pony up the dough to book a stay and fish their property.

I also have to believe they didn't expect free fish forever from the PFBC & Yellow Breeches Anglers once they restricted access so I assume this expense & hassle was an expected part of their business plan. Where these fish come from I don't know, but there are sources and I expect the Allenberry is aware of their options.

Deciding to NOT stock and let nature take its course is a risky option because IF it became a top notch wild trout fishery (which I doubt will happen), it ain't gonna happen soon enough to appease paying anglers and to be honest, if that IS the intention, the section would be better served CLOSED to fishing for a few years...

We'll see...

I believe they would have to purchase them from a PFBC approved hatchery.
They’ll be easy to catch too because they’ll be hungry - stocked fish don’t adapt to stream diet very quickly - especially when the stream bed is silted in since the lake reconstruction and there are close to zero wild trout to learn from - the Donny Beaver “ghillie” method of pounding on the fish with pellets an hour before the clients guided trip begins will be in full effect - it’s laughable …. truly
For sentimental value - here’s a look at the last fish I ever caught there - and the fly used - au revoir Allenberry! hope all your plans come true 😬
