Peak Rotary Vise Issue

Recenty the jaws on my Peak Rotary started sticking. To the point I have to smack it with, usually whatever is handy at the moment with some heft. And sometimes it still won’t unstick. When I release the tensioner the jaws (the ‘normal sized’ ones, not the saltwater) stay pulled back into the ‘housing?’ Anyone have any experience with this? Know of a fix? New jaws? Light sanding? Lube? In the meantime I’ll look to the google….
 
Have you taken it apart and put it back together? Is it just the jaws sticking or is it the lever? Did you get some glue in there? Do you have another pair of jaws to try?

They are pretty easy to pull apart and put back together. I've had one for 17 years and never had issues.

BTW Peak was recently sold to new owners. I had an issue with my micro jaws not closing properly. They were incredibly helpful and accommodating. I suggest that you reach out. I believe the product come with a lifetime warranty.
 
Aside from the advice to reach out to Peak, I would also lightly sand the jaws (with really fine emory paper or something) if Peak can't/won't help. I wonder if there's not a buildup of wax, super glue, Hard as Nails, etc. in there that cause it to be sticky.

Dear Esoxbum,

It's probably just me, but I like to go to the manufacturer or seller of a product for suggestions first before I start fiddle-farting around with something. It may be a problem they are familiar with, and they can suggest a proper fix and/or offer you a reduced price on replacement parts if they are needed. You can even tell them the vise was a gift and see if they will help you out. It's definitely worth a shot!

My brain is telling me your either horsing down to much on the tensioner or it needs to be cleaned. Have you ever cleaned it? Before calling anybody I would remove the removable jaws and clean it. If that didn’t work then I’d call peak.
 
Any vice that uses a collet to squeeze the jaws closed can get sticky from any number of things that get between the jaws and the collet via the gap between the jaws.

As as already been suggested, I'd try disassembling the jaws and looking at the jaws themselves and the inside of the collet for any debris.

IF you find anything like head cement or wax, a little head cement thinner (lacquer thinner) or acetone on a rag should take care of things. I follow that with a wipe of something like Boeshield, Fluid Film or WD-40,

DON'T sand anything regardless of the grit because you will remove the anodization and invite rust.

jaws, not the lever. I’m going to put the musky size jaws in and see what’s what

Collet…that’s it!
 
Saltwater jaws don’t stick and no gunk on them or in collet. Seems like the jaws are just aged and have the tiniest lip that has formed (probably from over torquing it). Barely noticeable to the touch. Going to soak/clean them and try a little dry lithium grease. If that doesn’t work I’ll sand it a bit (the anodizing is already worn off there) and contact Peak and try to ‘squeeze’ news jaws, the brass thumbscrew upgrade, the LED light, and the Brass extension for the base out of them. Expectations are low…but maybe If I ask for $300+ in accessories they’ll settle on a new set of jaws….

Actually I’m going to give it a good polishing before I sand it…

Please don’t sand it. Fine gauge steel wool was made for metal finishing. Use a solvent with the steel wool. Use #0000
