I hit Oil Creek yesterday for a few hours. It was a gray day and started out chilly. It warmed to about 60 with a bit of sun peaking through the clouds before I left around 2. I spent the day walking and looking for risers. The morning was a bit slow until about 8:45-9:00 when fish started rising to emerging grannoms. I caught fish on a low riding pattern. The fishing slowed again at about 11:00 and picked up again at around noon when I found a pool with a dozen or so fish sporadically rising to grannom egg layers that were dancing on the water. I caught several fish and stung a few more.
There was one rainbow that really made my day. This fish was rising consistently every 2-3 minutes. I spent almost a half hour carefully working this fish before my fly was in the zone at the right time. The fish finally slurped in the fly. I set the hook and this rainbow shot out of the water making a couple of spectacular leaps. It was one of those moment all fly fisherman live for. Just sharing the experience gets my blood pumping!
I also met a nice gentleman who was kind enough to share grannom pattern he tied up and was doing well with. I love this kind of camaraderie in fly fishing. It's part of what make this sport so special.
