Now this is interesting... Penns Cave to become state park?

I didn't read the article yet, but this would be AMAZING if Penns was preserved, cared for, and PUBLIC. I'll read the article now.

Edit: I've read the article. If the PA state legislature and/or the governor fails to approve this motion, I will be very, very upset.
 
I can't for the life of me imagine why this wouldn't be approved. It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to preserve this awesome natural site for generations to come. Not to mention, the incredable generosity of this family allowing this to become a reality.

I cannot imagine anyone being opposed to preserving that property as a state park. Would be great if some of Penns Creek downstream from the lake could be added for public fishing access also.
 
That would be amazing, and I think there is precedent - the state's newest park is Laurel Caverns: PA's newest State Park

This would offer great headwater protections for the watershed, and perhaps open up some additional fishing access on park land. I could see a no-fishing allowed rule though, both for the lake and the section of creek below it.
 
I don’t know if Governor Shapiro is a fly fisherman or even a conservationist for that matter - just not sure? I hope he makes the right decision for the Commonwealth of PA.
 
I love this...in theory. In reality, the government seems to ruin everything it touches. Just hope the property is well maintained and cared for - one of the cooler places I've visited in the state.

Someone told me recently that Homewaters controls a fishing section just below the Penns Cave Lake?

Come on, man, PA has some of the best state parks out of any state I've ever been in, especially considering their daily usage is free to all people, residents and non-residents alike. As long as it is kept clean, has restrooms, and is protected from development, the commonwealth will be doing enough to help support and protect the headwaters of one of the best eastern US trout streams.

Now if they started stocking it, that would be something. I'd have to protest that one.
 
Quite frankly...

I'd rather the Commonwealth of PA would spend the money needed to purchase and implement a State Park or other State facility at Penns Cave on reestablishing weigh stations on PA Interstates so NO other Pennsylvania State Trooper or other LEO is killed doing motor carrier enforcement unprotected on the side of the road...

Dear Bamboozle,

Not to derail the thread or diminish the loss of Trooper Pahira in any way, but I would also like to see the motor carriers that hire unqualified drivers be punished severely. That will help make the roads more safe for all.

Dear jifigz,

I agree that PA has a large and impressive State Park system. I just wish it didn't cost nearly $ 35.00 to sleep in my truck overnight. The average tent site is $ 28.00, and you need to spend $ 6.50 with the online reservation system to book it. I miss driving up to the gate, getting an envelope, driving to a site, writing the number on the envelope and driving back to the gate house and dropping the envelope with the princely sum of $ 5.00 per night in the lock box. But I'm old! 😉

The booking fee is frustrating.

I'm generally impressed with DCNR managed lands, though. Living in PA puts you in the mindset that state parks are free. I'm quickly reminded that is not the case elsewhere when I cross state lines.

Me too. I had a DCNR state park ranger help me get a big buck back to my truck a few years ago. He used his DCNR truck to drive me and my buck a long way, and it saved me about an hour+ of difficult dragging. He saw my truck at the parking area well after dark, and called me by name from his bull horn to make sure I was okay. He ran the tag on my truck, that's how he knew my name. I though it was very professional of him. He said, I see your truck here every year. 🙂
 
The booking fee is ridiculous, its per site not transaction. I recently booked a group of campsites together in tiadaghton state forest, no amenities other than a picnic table and a pit toilet. Walk in sites. 6.50 booking fee added onto the $10/ night charge for each site and those sites arent cheap anymore....

Some state park campgrounds still keep some sites available for first come first serve booking in person.

Generally we are blessed with the amount of public land and state park facilities in Pa, especially that we can access them for free. Some campgrounds desperately need bath house renovations and dcnr is diligent about upgrades when funding in the atate budget is appropriated to do so.
 
My goal in retirement is to start hitting some of these. I think I remember reading about some family that had visited them all.
