Fished from 7:30 to 1:30 right behind the shop. Air temp was about 26 when I showed up. Good thing I didn't take my neoprenes out of my car yet for the year. Fishing was pretty slow in the morning due to the temps. As the temps rose the fish became more active. There was a pretty sizable midge hatch that started around 12 but I only saw 1 rise all day. Landed 4 and missed a few. All on junk flies, mainly IPW's. No interest in any caddis nymphs. Bob expected the grannoms to pop sometime this week. I'll be up to fish it pending it's not blown out from the rain this week (again).

they been around all week, theyre stoners about size 12 or 14 all over SW PA. I will be heading up tomorrow if you see me say hello
 
fished it last night, not much bug action. some fish were sipping midges, forgot my grifiths at home!! ended up using a small black soft hackle dressed with floatant and was able to salvage the evening. the fish were taking the bugs VERY gently and in the tailouts of the riffles. if you didn't look long and hard enough, they weren't even noticeable.
damn stockies!
 
You can't EVER forget your griffiths. One of my best producing flies.

I had record that the grannoms started on the 28th of March last year, but that was an anomoly due to the warm weather. I'll be out at least once when they do start coming off. Historically they only come off for about 5 days, so don't hesitate to go and fish!
 
well, heavy storms all evening tonite, and it's still raining now, so I'd say it's gonna be high for a couple days now. That's ok, been getting too crowded, need the season to start so folks can spread out to other cricks!

Hope the grannoms don't hatch during this high water period. I don't think they will though. One hatch I really want to hit this year is the drakes, heard it's pretty good on Neshannock but I never fished it.
 
The grannoms came off on the high water 2 years ago. Was completely unfishable.


I've fished the brown drakes 3-4 times. It's a late night venture and I won't say if I was breaking DHALO rules by fishing past dark or not. Caught my first bat durring that spinnerfall a few years ago. It can be very good action!

The brown Drake hatch is short lived maybe only 4 days or so. It comes then it's gone. You have to drop everything and go if you want to catch it. Then you gotta hope the fish are in the mood to eat on top.

Not necessarily. The duns will emerge in decent numbers throughout the day and if the water conditions are good the fish will often take them opportunistically. It's a lot like fishing March Browns / Grey Foxes. Just bigger.

(MB's/GF"s being the only other predictable, reliable, fishable mayfly hatch on Neshannock in my experience.)
 
Every time the brown drakes hatch, there's also a hatch of some sort of cahill that's a chartreuse color about a size 14. I haven't been able to catch one for ID, but they are the brightest bug I've seen.

I've done fairly well with the few times I've caught the drake spinner fall. Drake nymphs are notorious for being fast swimmers and emergers, but I have never fished the emergence on the Neshannock. I really have enjoyed the spinners when I've caught them in years past.
 
Any of you locals see the grannoms yet? I'm hoping they don't come when the water's high again. Rain for today and Friday doesn't look too good.
 
I fished it yesterday, water was dropping at a decent rate. However, when I talked to Bob it didn't sound like they had been seeing any Grannoms. It's all going to depend on how much rain and where it hits I suppose.
 
I was going to fish it Sunday but it was still too high. Ended up hitting a couple smaller creeks in the system and didn't really see much bug activity(don't have any prior hatch experience on those small streams though). Did have a little black stone land on me.

Grannoms should be starting here real soon.
 
Well if you were predicting Spring creek I'd have to be impressed. Neshannock shouldn't be too far behind!

im going up tomorrow, there were 3 different species of mayflies and big ones too hatching at buffalo today so with the temps sky rocketing tomorrow im sure I can catch some fish, ill def be up in the afternoon
 
Might have seen some March Browns...
 
One species was another looked like a huge blue winged olive and and that pattern produced so I'm guessing that's what it was it was size 16
 
Stopped by the shop today because I was up that way for business. Shot the breeze with Bob for a while. He said a few small BWO's are hatching in the morning but no sign of grannoms yet. Decent rain coming tomorrow so we'll see what the conditions look like afterwards. I'm planning on fishing Saturday, and will be there if the stream is ok, but I'm kind of doubting it will be.
