Neshannock Creek, Lawrence Co, 4/6/13 DHALO

I fished today, the guy beside me said he had a grannom land on him but im 90% sure it was a stonefly. They were everywhere this evening, I did very well on a light Hendrickson nymph today
 
I'm almost definitely going to be on it next weekend, Friday and Saturday, and there's a possibility I might be there this weekend(probably Sun.) if it's fishable. Hopefully the grannoms land on a weekend!! And hopefully it's not a repeat of 2 years ago.

Yeah Neshannock has a lot of stoneflies and the hatches can be pretty heavy at times, but the fish never seem to key in on them. If I remember correctly I think I've stumbled upon a sulfur or light cahill this time of year last year.
 
I hope it doesn't land on a weekend, haha that stream may as well be called the walnut away from Erie
 
^haha yeah you're right. Neshannock is the closest decent trout stream to me, but it's still way to far to do weekday trips
 
I'll be there tomorrow and maybe sometime next week.

I always said that the grannoms were a snowstorm of a hatch but that came literally today. Snowed off and on from 7:30-1 today. Saw some grannoms but we're probably yesterday's bugs. I Saw. maybe 3-4 rises but some were probably Chubs.
I tied on 2 partridge and peacock and never changed flies. Landed 4 and missed at least a dozen. Most strikes were when I hung them in the current for a while after they swung. Flies were a max of 1" under the surface on all strikes. Fish became very active at any sight of sunlight. They turned on the switch and started to take.

Caught and saw some real dink rainbows there. Like 7". I've seen a few here and there over the years but it seemed there were a lot that size in the stream.
 
This is my first post here on PAFF, and I caught my first two trout ever on a flyrod, at Neshannock today. Landed two decent sized brown trout under the bridge behind the shop, around 2PM today. I was using a size 14 copper john with green crystal bead. I ended up losing 2 of these flys and didn't have any more, so tried a few other patterns but no luck after this except for a chub. Walked maybe a mile down the stream and tried to target some areas that looked promising, but no success.

Seeing some of the casting that others were doing today made me realize how far I have to go. My learning to this point has been watching YouTube videos of basic techniques and knot-tying, and it just looks so much easier when watching not only pros, but some of the guys on the water today. Just need to suck it up and not let it stress me out. I was probably tangled more than I had a decent cast in the water, but catching those 2 made it worth it.

Seems like everyone here is so helpful so I look forward to using this forum to learn more about all the local streams and flyfishing in general.

 
Welcome Loukaza, Hey just remember its about keeping the fly in the water not about casting. Use the water to cast, feel the load, keep the fly in the air. Don't cast it, Fell it.

Welcome aboard, Loukaza! Practice, learn and improve, but most important....have fun along the way....don't take it too seriously.

See that!....Mo was having fun....I think he was feeling the load last night in the early morning hours....Rams Head?! :-?
 
There's also a good amount of people from this part of the state on the board, so find one of us to share a stream with this year and get some free instruction!
 
Fished behind the shop yesterday from about 11:30-3. Grannoms were out but literally no top water activity. Very frustrating day. I coaxed 1 fish to rise twice, but that was about it on top. I had a few takes on some pupa and cased caddis patterns but only landed 1. Water temp was 52, so that might have a little to do with it.


btw... if you play hooky to go fish and don't tell your wife... make sure to wear sun screen.......
 
As a teacher, I can say I have no problem with students taking the ocassional day off to go fishing.
 
I skipped 3 days in a row my senior year of high school to hit the first wave of caddis hatches and my environmental science teacher thought that was the coolest thing in the world, the others not so much.
