Pennsylvania weighs coal mine discharge permit that would send treated wastewater into trout stream

While the minewater would be treated, critics of the proposal say this would not eliminate risk, noting that wastewater can still carry pollutants.

Some of you might have seen my report on Glenwhite Run.

As a young man, that stream was dead and ran orange. 6 weeks ago, I caught brook trout in it.

That water in that watershed isn't just for the trout: a number of folks in Altoona rely on it.

Mining heritage runs deep: and there is the star- crossed promise of jobs, in a depressed area, desperate for a return to the 'good old days'.

I hope some 'third way' can take root: where that watershed is cared for, and perhaps, a responsible, accountable extractive industry can coexist with it, steward it.
