Daybreak on the Letort,in the winter, is probably one of my favorite things in this world. Unlike most Decembers the water wasn't steaming but the foggy air gave a similar look I've grown to love.
The lower Letort this year is an odd sight for December. Usually by now the cress has died back but instead it is in full summertime bloom. Odd looking because the riparian foliage looks to be in fall mode, while the trees are in winter stage. BWO's never materialized, did see a few egg laying caddis lol and midges but not a single rise.
The fish were holding tight to the cress cover and tossing a 4" long articulated Conrad sculpin proved hot for the first 1 1/2 hours. Took 8 fish before things calmed down. At that point I took lunch and then headed to the Heritage Area.
Ran into "Mike D", whom was there the day I caught "the big ugly" 27" male. He caught the best fish of his season today. Congrats Mike! We talked for a bit and it was good to see him. We discussed the issues with the conservancy property and how the state budget woes won't allow for grants to be released. I urge everyone to buy the new Letort Book or donate to the cause. We can't lose this great opportunity! I "fished" for a bit but spent hours watching the tanks in Bonnybrook spawn. They are still at it but are slowing down when compared to a few weeks ago. Still, the headwaters downstream to just past the quarry has a ton of activity. Please no wading! In all I totaled out with a dozen fish, nothing big but had one chance at a tank but no hook up.
After that I met up with NightStalker and JG. I didn't even get my rod out as we just BS'd for about 1 hour or so. Best part of the day really. It was a very enjoyable trip. Maybe the best all year for me. Nothing like chatting with friends & new acquaintances , doing a little fishing and watching the fish do their thang in a place as beautiful as the Letort. So looking forward to coming back early next year.
