Took a "sick" day at work yesterday...hit Rockport. Flows around 450 in Rockport - apparently jumped up to about 500/550 at some point but I didn't notice. Water was about 65/66 degrees F. No surface activity - although, out of the corner of my eye while I was tying on a fly, something did launch itself out of the water and when it landed it sounded like someone threw a massive log in the water...thinking it was a big brown chasing down a dragonfly as there were a few zipping about.
Landed 6 trout, lost a few nice ones as well with late hook sets - some nicely colored native browns, smaller side. But also two 14-15 inch browns, and a nice 17-18 inch brown. All on stonefly nymphs (Pat's rubber legs and Kaufman styles). I tried emergers - slate drakes, BWOs, and sulphurs, but couldn't get a hit. Also caught a tiny smallmouth on the stonefly as well.
Went father upstream past White Haven to see if anything was hatching in a few slower pools much later in the afternoon - lots of sulphurs, BWOs - smaller size probably size 14/16. Also some yellow/lime green sallies. Saw an occasional fish rising but couldn't get any slurps on top on a variety of different flies. Threw on a stonefly and went up into a riffle and lost two fish immediately. Probably should have stayed later for the evening hatch, but I talked to a gentleman who said he was there a few days ago and nothing was taking anything on the surface in the middle of a bunch of hatches - so they switched to black stoneflies and had much better success.
