Lehigh River (Rockport Access, Carbon County) 4/14/18

As you near Sandy Run from the West, side the fish tend to stay on east side where water quality is a bit better from confluence downstream about 1/4 mile or so depending on flows. Sandy run is dead. Not sure if you are fishing that far up.

Would love to meet up again but am traveling for work. Won't be home til next Friday. Keep up the posts it keeps me sane in my time away from that water and good luck.
 
Thanks for the heads up Tigereye - I didn't even make it up that far. I spent way too much time crawling around the boulders and slowly working my way upstream picking apart all of the water...and it paid off.

Lots of fish today. Plenty of wild browns, couple nice sized ones, smaller rainbows and also about a 14 inch Brookie...caught right below Buttermilk Falls. I'm assuming it was an old stockie?

Couple hatches throughout the day, but I only saw one or two fish rise. One big Caddis hatch, Hendrickson hatch as well. Caught mine on the usual, stonefly nymphs.
 
I went out yesterday and fished from 3-7:30. I was below Rockport and did pretty well on a spent caddis pattern and then a Hendrickson Spinner. Hook came out on probably the biggest one right before I netted him that was probably pushing 20". Brad, what PFD do you have? I use a wading staff but I fished a lone yesterday with no one around so would be a good idea to use a PFD as well.
 
I've started using a sturdy stick with a string tied to it as a staff...I'll be getting a legitimate wading staff soon. I have a PFD but it gets in the way of my chest pack so I rarely wear it...I don't mess around on the Lehigh anymore though, I've had a couple slip ups but I do not push myself. Honestly, I don't think I could properly wear the PFD or it wouldn't inflate right with my Fishpond chestpack/backpack combo.

Anyways I need to try fishing other patterns. I just never see any fish rising! And I was by good dry fly water yesterday too.

 
Anybody know what the flow plans are for this week? I know theres whitewater saturday and fishing sunday next weekend. Thurs and fri this week are good days for me to get out this, just wondering what the wading situation will be, thanks
 
I don't think there is a set plan during the week. You just have to check the FB page and see what they post each morning. It looks like they aren't changing it today so maybe it will be wadable during the week but not sure.

Brad, have you seen this before?

NRS Chinook PFD

Thought about buying that and using it when I wade something like the Lehigh or Upper D on my own. Don't think I would use an individual PFD with my current chestpack like you said since it would get in the way.
 
They are going to need to build pool this week to get the lake level to 1,370' by this weekend. So I imagine they will keep the outflow slightly less than inflow in order to 'skim' some water. At which time they get to 1,370' they will match inflow.

As someone else mentioned check their FB page - https://www.facebook.com/fewalterdam - as of now they are showing no change today.

Overall I'd guess that releases this week should be relatively consistent.

You don't need Facebook. Do a Google search for Francis E Walter Dam release schedule, and you will get the right links.
 
I have those links surf cowboy, they put the plans for the day up on the facebook page each day, i have all the release dates both fishing and whitewater, all that stuff. Thanks

There is also the USGS links to both the reservoir level and use the White Haven gauge for the release level.

Bummer they bumped the release back up, was hoping they would hold that 400 for thurs and fri.
 
They bumped it up a little bit but it still might be wadable in some spots. The further up the better probably.
 
I'd be careful. Actually when they release more water you want to go farther down river where the river gets wider and the water can spread out a bit.
 
I'm shooting to be in the gorge on Sunday if anyone is interested in meeting up...need to tie more girdle bugs before I go though!
 
I thought there was a fishing release on Friday too, i see thats not correct. Hopefully they will dial it back

Brad i would love to meet up but sunday is mothers day so theres no way that is going to happen! Maybe next year we can switch it up and the fisherman can have saturday and the whitewater JO's can have mothers day
 
Beautiful weather all week...now it's supposed to have thunderstorms Saturday and rain all of Sunday across all the spots in eastern PA that'd I'd fish... Never fished the Lehigh in the rain, but if they keep the flows steady I'll likely be there Sunday regardless...

Barring any major deluge of water in the upper watershed, my best guess is that the release will be 400 CFS or less on Sunday. With the 800 CFS release on Saturday it should drop the lake below the desired 1370ft elevation. That means the ACOE will want "build the Pool" back up. All depends on what inflow will be.

The Lehigh has fished well on rainy dreary days. I'll be out Friday and Saturday. I might get hunted down if I try for Sunday too.
 
Looks like they opened up the spigot early. Sux for anybody who was out fishing today
