Cousin and I floated the lower water from Dunbars to Btown launch. Put in at 8 am and noticed a good swarm of tricos with some paraleps mixed in. I messed up and did not think of bringing those little bastards along on the float. Of course the trout were on them and I just watched as some very large trout refused my offerings.



Got down in a section of water that I have been dieing to hit for trout and saw a few rises. I decided to force feed them an isosaurus. However, they refused it on top and wanted it swung under the surface. Took two bows on the swing. It was probably about 10am at this time and I started to see more caddis and some iso's mixed in. Fish were done though and everything shut down.





Sun got high in the sky and not until 4PM did anything begin to happen. Ended up picking off 4 more browns blind casting an isosaurus. Unfortunately, my cousin ended up catching the skunk but did miss a few.



My recommendation would be to fish early and then get back on the water around 3. That is if you plan on only dry fly fishing. Nymphing is still good during the day but concentrate on the deep runs.

It was a great day on the water and probably got my last good tan for the year.


 
Another section recorded, nice report Shane. Did you ever flloat between Jim Thorpe and dunbars? I've always wanted to hit it but just keep going to the gorge out of habit, well that and I know where the fish hang out up there.I catch the majority of mine sub surface, not just on the Lehigh but pretty much everywhere in the Poconos, dries at the end of the day if they're on them.
 
Was out there this am, fished below the pohopoco confluence after finding the gap too windy.
around 8 i hooked into what i believe was a smallie on a streamer, but he shook my off as i brought him in close.
Saw lots of bugs from 9 on - little mayflies (size of a trico but greenish?) a few larger mayfliese here and there and some caddis.

fish started rising, clearing the water with regularity... never did figure out what they were one. Hooked 2 more, but failed to land either - both on a generic mayfly emerger.

Great river to fish this time of year... need to learn how to fight and land these bigger fish!

I have not. Think it has to do with not knowing the length of the float. Friends of mine have floated it in tubes\ beer and they have said it is pretty long with slow stretches and lots of rafters. Believe it or not even in this super low water they are still running trips. One of these days I will do it.
 
Nice report. Lots of guys are having great fishing on the Lehigh right now. And you rarely find the water this clear.

The float from Glen Onoko or Jim Thorpe to Dunbars is a full day. Lots of good water throughout that stretch.
 
New here and been lurking for a while but fish the LR regularly. Fished gorge near White Haven Saturday AM. Saw some caddis and stones above the riffles but no surface activity.

Water was low clear and rising in temp. Picked up 2 rainbows ~11" on nymphs in riffles that where shaded by mtn or trees. Missed a few more. All action stopped when sun got on water.

I really need to get over to the Lehigh River - been on my bucket list for awhile. It's great to hear such good news about this river.
 
You know Phil, I'll still take you up to the gorge but I will tease you if you use a bobber.

Fished below Lehighton yesterday. Small olives were pouring off at 1:30pm when I got there. They did slow up an then there were some sulphurs coming off, and some isos. Nothing too heavy but the fish were still looking up. In the flat water the fish were very skittish, but in the chop they were feeding with reckless abandon. A mix of small wild browns, holdover browns and holdover bows.

Looking at the weather this week, the fishing should remain great. The river is about as easy to navigate on foot right now as it ever is. Get out there!
 
i think i'll give it a shot tomorrow as i'm off work.

i don't know the area but the water below the glen onoko trailhead lot looks like it may have seams and pockets.

i had planned on hitting the poho or saucon, but this seems like an opportunity to fish otherwise inaccessible water and adds another river to my list.

How would filling out that survey benefit the fishery? I never pay
that much attention to every fish I see, a picture or two if it's particularly nice in some way, but as far as actual measurements or even accurate counts I've never let specifics ruin a good day on the water. If the information gleaned would somehow help the fish survive I would happily fill it out but if it's about the put and take I'll pass. I am being sincere.
 
The reason we are doing the surveys is to demonstrate usage by anglers and that they are catching trout in the Lehigh. The more anglers we show that use the river the better chance there is for getting better releases from FEW and hopefully some day those releases will be cold all summer long. Without usage and support, the river will just be a rafting Disneyland.

The big contention with our gov't agencies with the river is not being fished. Then when the PFBC tries to electro shock the river they don't turn up many trout. So the combination leads to a lot of skepticism.

Our organization has been arguing that the river is being used more than ever by anglers and there are good numbers of trout in the river (both stocked and wild). So with the more we can demonstrate use and that there are trout in the river, the more protection and improvements we can get in the future.
 
Thanks for the response, I will surely fill some reports out, there are plenty of fish in that river, cold water would go a long way especially coupled with AMD remediation. Chris
 
What do people think? Wilds? I think they are. The top two fish are the same.

These were just recently caught in the lower lehigh trout zone, and not on top of tribs. Each year more and more of these sort of fish show up in the Lehigh. From well below the Gap up to the dam?

Bottom definitely wild. The big boy? It doesn't have the spots or stocking characteristics of stocked fish. I would bet wild.

I have heard some killer fishing had been happening in the Treichlers area.
