My son and I fished the lower end of the gorge from 12-5pm yesterday. Air temp was around 60 degrees and it was overcast, water temp was 49-50 and flows were great with the fishing release. Small hendricksons were in the air and on the water, it wasn't a huge hatch but they were there and the fish were rising to them in the slower, deeper water. It was tough to find fishable stretches where the risers were within reach but we managed to find a few productive spots and put three browns in the net, all on dries. We basically had the entire river to ourselves - we saw only one small group of people fishing the entire day.
At one point a fish rose to my fly and broke off my entire rig including two dry flies and a tippet ring, probably due to a faulty knot. 10 minutes later after tying on a new rig, I somehow hooked the same fish who came to the net with both rigs attached to his lip. I even got my tippet ring back, was very nice of the fish to return it to me! I also had my first ever double dry fly hook up but my excitement quickly turned to shame when I realized it was two chubs attached to the end of my line, lol. My son also got a cool pic of a real hendrickson that had landed on his fly patch right next to his tied imitation.
All in all a good, fun day. We covered a lot of ground on our bikes, ate a couple of good hoagies and drank a beer while sitting on big boulders by the water. Plus the mighty Lehigh still scares the crap out of me so anytime I leave the gorge without having fallen into the river and with all my bones intact is a win.
