Leader to fly line: Don’t know if this has been posted before but I found it useful

Leader to Line…I chimed in on that already but offering a Teaberry Ice Cream tip.
My recently departed father-in-law loved Teaberry Ice Cream. He didn’t inform us of this fact until he was 90 years old.

When I started fly fishing again, he was excited to give me his tying materials and a couple of older rods. He wasn’t an avid fly fisherman, but gave it a fair trial; he preferred other types of fishing. I need to add this fact because I think of him often when tying and fishing.

My wife celebrates his memory occasionally with Teaberry Ice Cream. She’s found it in our local Weis Grocery Store (Linglestown/Harrisburg). She’s also found it in a Weis Bethlehem location too. It sells out at times, so, it must popular.

Fairly certain they have Perry's teaberry ice cream at the Elk Life store in Benezette if you are ever up that way.

My dad used those on some lines, and he referred to them as a Grain of Rice. I'm not sure if that was the company's terminology or just something he made up.

It looks like Teaberry ice cream is available at PSU's Berkey Creamery. Their ice cream is really good, and it is still packaged in a full-sized 1/2 gallon container. It's listed down near the bottom of the menu. My current favorite there is Monkey Business. It's a banana-flavored ice cream with peanut butter and chocolate chips. And, I do not like real bananas.

If you ever swing by while in Centre County, the folks at the Creamery will pack your ice cream in dry ice for the ride home.

Yuengling lists Teaberry as a flavor they are making now since they restarted their ice cream line. The problem is I have no idea where to get Yuengling Ice Cream anymore. When I was kid it was everywhere in Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties. Even gas stations that had a freezer case and sold ice had a Yuengling Ice Cream sign hanging outside.

I don't recall seeing Yuengling ice cream in any local grocery stores here in the Skook, but I typically shop only two or three stores. I'll keep an eye out for it and report back.

Yes, but it's about half-gallon size, so it's much bigger than a cup or pint.

It's not your typical elliptical cylinder.😉

Anyone remember those little plastic-torpedo-clippy gimmicks for securing leader to fly line?

I actually saw some at a few mom & pop tackle shops/hardware stores out in the midwest, on faded display boards for sale, recently. Maybe someone still makes/uses those? LOL

After a quick search to satisfy my curiosity, I see these things still being offered for sale online as well, right now! Might just have to try it to see for myself. LOL

Those are called Leader Links made by Wright & Magill(Eagle Claw). I still see them around in shops. I have some on few of my reels. I have never had them fail. I also have loop to loop too.

Meyers dairy on S. Atherton has it too. Better ice cream than PSU. The best ice cream in SC is Wasson Farms on rt45. They are only open during the summer months (may until Halloween). It is very inexpensive too.

Man you guys are bringing back some memories with those old school connectors! I forgot about them! I remember totally improvising when all I could tie was overhand knots. An overhand knot on the fly line to make a small bump then the leader butt overhand knot around the fly line above the bump! If it wasn’t for the loop to loop I would need to turn back to that in my waning years!

And yet, we still caught fish!

I'm in my late fifties. My comment regarding the shape of the ice cream container wasn't because I thought it was some new-fangled idea that hasn't been around forever. The reason I mentioned it in response to Tim's post regarding Yuengling ice cream is because there are three brands of ice cream sold in grocery stores that are based out of, or made in, Schuylkill County of which I am aware.

The brands are Heisler's, Leiby's, and Yuengling. They all come in full-sized containers that are either identical or nearly so. My point being that this leads me to believe there is a good possibility that all three brands are manufactured in the same facility by one dairy. Perhaps they use different recipes, or maybe it's the same ice cream sold under different names.

My favorite teaberry used to be from long gone Hartmans on Rte 115 near Belfast. Weis brand is the only one I can find out east these days.

BTW, I have been fly fishing for 60 years and have tried a long list of connections. I had a lengthy love of needle knots until I lost the dexterity to do them reliably, and then switched to nail knots. Then it was loop - loop (which I still do on occasion and for salt water/heavier leaders) but currently use clinch knot for long dry fly and nymph leaders. That will likely change once more based on my history. I tried the super glue connections and they worked well until they failed. Hated losing fish with fly and leader attached.

Gotcha, gotcha...or...someone has cornered the market on cheap local containers. We don't make ice cream but one of our biggest expenses is boxes. You might find a clue in the order of ingredients.

Red Rock Scoops still sells Teaberry. My favorite when I go there.

Most folks have never even had wintergreen ice cream. I find it very refreshing on a hot day.
