As to holding the fish, they don’t all let you do that. You can kinda tell when one’s not gonna cooperate. No big deal. Get a picture in the net in that scenario, or just let it go. Not worth hurting the fish.

I will say this, anecdotally, Brookies and Browns are much calmer than Bows when out of the water. I can usually get Brookies and Browns to lay still for a second or two to get a pic. Bows, it’s probably less than 50% of them. I don’t catch a lot of wild Bows, and I don’t really have a desire to take pictures of most stocker Bows, so it’s not much of an issue. Wet your hands, don’t squeeze them, the usual stuff. If they won’t lay calmly in your open hand or up along your forearm, just let the fish go.

I detect some large woody debris (LWD) in that last photo.
That stream has a ton of LWD and it creates great habitat.

Although, the last time I was fishing it, a big branch fell ~40 feet out of the sky off a dying tree and landed in the pool I was fishing. I actually got snagged on it, mid drift. Annoying but being soaking wet and tangled up was a much better outcome than being crushed to death..

What is LWD?

Large woody debris.
Yes. L Woody Debris as my favorite C&W artist from the mid 1950's. Who can forget his all time hit "My Daddy Was an Oak and Momma Hard as a Beach, But She Bent My Heart Like it Was a Willow Branch?"

That is a great pic! Not to steal your thunder, but it's the closest I've seen to what I consider my best brook trout photo. The similarities are striking.
I liked it enough to have it enlarged and framed.

Great photos. Did you tie the fly in its mouth? What fly is it?
