Hippie Stomper

I have seen several patterns for tying the Hippie Stomper. I’ve never tied nor fished one (I don’t see much distinction between various flies like the hopper, stimulators and similar). My question is where does the name come from? It’s a western pattern so I initially thought it was out of hatred of the dreaded long haired, pot smoking radical. However, in looking at it, it appears to perhaps look a bit like a rubber soled sandal. Does anyone know the answer. Perhaps Cheech from Fly Fish Food would know or at least make up a credible story! I’ve always believed that a credible and entertaining lie is better than admitting ignorance. 😀

No idea, but a purple hippy stomper is about the only foam bug/fly that I'll fish (and I only VERY rarely fish them). I agree with you though, they're mostly interchangeable.

“Mort’s ‘advice’ on proper catch and release technique was something to the effect of, ‘Ah, well, I just drag my fish up into the sand, give ’em the old hippie stomp (stomps ground), yank the hook out and kick ’em back in the water’ (makes an exaggerated kicking motion, sending sand into the river)."

Hippie Stomper is a great pattern. No idea how it got its name, but that's the cool part about designing stuff and being an "artist" - you can name stuff whatever you'd like. The name might stem from an inside-joke between some buddies or a drunken night around a fire on a camping trip.

It's definitely a good pattern, though.

I witnessed such activities on Elk Creek below Uncle Johns a couple years ago,I didn't have my phone or would of videoed it and called fish comm

I think I heard the story a while ago from Charlie Craven. It was inspired by his wife. I think she was of the hippie mind-set. Charlie was not so much. I THINK he tied this and gave it that name. I don't know the ramifications on his marriage.

That was Charlie's fly the Dirty Hippy. The Hippy Stomper was created by Andrew Grillos, as noted in the link in post #3 of this thread.
