Finally caught a unicorn

Actually caught one about the same size on the Brodhead two seasons ago.

After nearly 20 years of fly fishing and chasing wild trout it finally happened today. Streams in my neck of the woods were dialed in after Saturday’s rain session and it was good to see some flow and a stain to the water. I started off nymphing which yielded only one trout in an hour. Feeling dejected I tied on a streamer and fished fresh section of stream with only one swipe to show for all of the work. I was going to call it and head for plan B but something told me to press on. I’m really glad I did because things started to really turn on and within a half hour I landed 6 healthy browns.

What happened next I will likely never get to experience again. I tossed out my Barrs Bouface streamer and stripped it back and connected with a solid fish. I initially thought I had a large brook trout but as it got closer I could hardly believe my eyes. I quickly netted the 12 inch tiger trout, snapped a few photos and said thank you and goodbye. I stopped fishing for a good 10 mins while I collected myself and took it all in. Definitely a day I will never forget! They are quite commonly being stocked these days it seems. Apparently, a local stream here in Juniata County has had a bunch stocked because many kids are catching them, and I've seen their pictures.

A stocked tiger trout means practically nothing, but a wild one is cool as can be.

Nope, was thigh deep in fast water and not close to shore. Anyway, l was suprised to see it and l released it before my buddy got to see it. It was the first and only one l've seen in person.
