New to fly fishing and newer to the forum so forgive any silly mistakes in this!
Hit the DHALO section around 1pm yesterday. Parked in the lot at the south end of Shelmire, walked upsteam a few hundred yards and waded in. Air temp around 80f, not sure about the water. First time at this river but water level seemed lower then i expected. Had one possible take on a caddis but caught nothing. Saw maybe 2/3 distant rises in the hour i was there. Didn't put eyes on any fish. Worked my way down to where I'd parked to a deeper pool but a family came swimming and that put an end to that. Passed one lady heading out with a spin rod on my way back.
Drove to the north limit of the DHALO section and got in at the bridge. Worked my way about 3/4 mile downstream in the center of the river casting to any deeper pools i could see. Saw a few deer running across the river as well as heron and some large eagle/hawk, but no fish. Not alot of insect activity and i'm assuming it was too hot and not a great time of day?
I did meet an older guy in the parking lot who seemed amused i didn't catch anything and suggested i should have focused on the downstream section of the river instead. All in all a nice day in a river to myself, some good casting practice and a great way to sweat out a hangover.
This would be my third time out fly fishing. The first was an evening at Pickering learning how to cast without embarrassing myself and not even thinking about fish , the second ended in 20 minutes with a broken rod tip, and this would be the third. I'm really enjoying being out in the water, but starting to get a little frustrated.
Without asking for any private/unknown spots anyone have a suggestion for where/when to hit (within reasonable distance of west chester/downingtown area) if i just want to catch something already? I'm not obsessed with catching trout(yet), i'd happily spend a day catching sunnies, chub, bass, bluegills, whatever. Anything to keep me banging my head against this fly fishing thing and keep me from heading back under the Marsh creek bridge with a tub of worms?
