Looks kinda like a perch
my guess is over breeding and a homogeneous gene pool that results. What causes the fish to sometimes grow in these weird shapes?

Stockers look ok from the smoker until you take that first bite - 🤢A number of years back, a good size golden RT was stocked pre-season in a Venango County stream. That would have been in early March. All through that season, he hung out under the same bush beside the bank. It's a busy stream, so he must have survived several hundred anglers and God only knows how many herons and mergansers. The stream is a decent wild brown trout fishery and I was down there in November counting redds and making the odd cast. He was still hanging out under the same bush. I flipped a #1 Moon-Glo Mepps Aglia a bit above him and he rushed it and ate it. He was about 17", I took him out and broiled him with some butter and garlic. He was about the worst fish I ever ate and my standards for eating fish aren't all that high..
So, he was in the creek for about 8 months, That's a long time for a stocked fish in general and especially for a golden RT.
I'd probably never get past the 2nd or 3rd bite regardless of how tasty/untasty they were. Smoked fish is usually a sodium bomb. I'd be on the floor with vertigo and doing the technicolor yawn repeatedly. Inner ear stuff...Stockers look ok from the smoker until you take that first bite - 🤢View attachment 1641250384
Only if you brine them. Or add salt.I'd probably never get past the 2nd or 3rd bite regardless of how tasty/untasty they were. Smoked fish is usually a sodium bomb. I'd be on the floor with vertigo and doing the technicolor yawn repeatedly. Inner ear stuff...
I was going for the kippered Herring smoke - great for beer drinking because of the saltlooks over-smoked. If those were whitefish, they'd be good. I put very much smoke on a trash trout. their mashed potato texture cant handle it. then I break it up and make smoked trout spread. you could probably still rescue those by making something like that with them. steelhead smoke up very nicely but its much firmer.
They look like they got the fate they deserved. Yuck!
