i don't fish any waters with cress bugs, but if i did i think i'd try Ed Shenk's version.

What kind water usually has them? I'm imagining slower current with more vegetation and weed beds, such as in spring creeks. Can't say i see many in the stuff i usually fish

Yes, they are in limestone spring creeks.

Lots of vegetation and very slow current are not required, though. For example Spring Creek in Centre County is a medium gradient stream and has few weedbeds, but has lots of sowbugs.
