Central PA small stream trout fishing!

Theres been rainbows in this stream for years. The stocked fingerlings in main stream move a good bit, most likely source of these is upstream hatchery. Their fish always look good and escapees are frequent.

I would have processed them as stocked fish, whether directly stocked, escaped from a hatchery, or through movement. I see individual or combined questionable problems with at least one fin or fin lobe on each…either rounded where it should be pointed…limited white marking or no white marking on anal fins, slightly ragged anal fin, slightly washed color on last fish. They remind me of stocked fish that I have seen in the past that were on their way to looking wild a few months down the road. I have no problems with fishing for stocked, questionably wild, or wild RT though ; my comments are just an observation on how I would have handled the situation if those fish had appeared in a fish pop survey.

i might add i caught a rainbows and browns in the 4-10inch range that looked wild aswell but i didn’t take photos of, my main conclusion is that they’re from fingerling stockings. Mixed in with how low the nearby hatchery is to the creek.

i wouldn’t recommend anyone fishing it generally, i had private access due to a friend and walked up the creek on their land but there were only about 3 spots that held fish…

Makes sense. Yeah, just didn’t seem like the type of place I’d be comfortable fishing without explicit landowner permission. And to fish any measurable stretch of it, you’d need permission from lots of different landowners. Only takes one po’d landowner to hassle you or call the authorities as you’re fishing up through, and you’d be crossing property lines nearly constantly.

(I don’t fish privately owned, but unposted water without permission anyway, unless it’s obvious…STW/Fishing Permitted signs, etc. Personal choice, and not judging anyone who does it different, but legally.)

That's true, I guess the size coupled with the parr marks kinda led me to think wild. Plus the overall shape looks more wild than the football shaped stockers PA likes to stock haha

what are you talking abt mate? Lol. You don’t even know whose property i was on and or where. The only time i went on other property it was open field. no harm no foul. if you view different then u do u but its not like im walking through someones back door.
