Had a great time down in Florida the last few weeks. When I arrived a cold front (the coldest in a few years- same stuff you were experiencing here moved south). I was primarly focused and excitied about doing some saltwater fishing- have been a few times. Still learning the good spots to go. Find one or two better spots each time I go- putting my time in.

With the winds and cold temps- hurts the saltwater fishing in the bays for trout, snook and redfish. I hit up some local lakes close by where I was staying and got into some nice bass action. Chartruse clouser worked great on the largemouths.

With the temps climbing back up into the 60's headed toward the saltwater. Get to learn about the wind and saltwater- lots of tired arms throwing hauls all day. Let my enthusiam get the best of me when I waded into some spots on the flats and spooked lots of fish. Lesson learned there. Certainly more time was spent with long periods of no action. Sometimes think salt is harder since there not alot of obvious holding water. Just looking for silver sides or some bait fish being pushed around.

One day fishing in Sarasota Bay- caught a Baracuda- not only that caught 2 in one day. Never ever seen one caught and I caught 2 in 1 day. They were juveniles but still hit the charturse clousre hard.

Did have those moments were I just have had 2 hours of nothing and the second didnt pay attention boom strike- and lost because I was able to strip strike. Did the Yankee lift a few times but did get better and kept my rod tip was under water on the retreives.

I do feel pretty good though- (not that I should need to feel good right- standing in a beautiful spot fly fishing with temps in 60-70's.) Because I did hook fish- put myself in good situations with identifying fish and making decent casts. Plus- even the spin guys were'nt catching many either.

Have really been looking forward to fishing for Snook and Redfish-with Tarpon later on down the line. Got a chance to fish for some Snook with a good chance of catching them. Again, took some time to scout out the spot before deciding. Ended up heading out the the spot about 7:30pm. Snook is mainly a night game- they love to hang out near lights and in my case the lights off a bridge fender.

Pretty cool, caught a Snook on my 3rd-4th cast. I set-up about 10 yards (up current from lighted bridge fender) and just drifted the closuers, shrimp patterns. There must have been dozens Snook ambushing bait fish. Would have probably caught more fish but there was so many bait fish by the lights that the fish had lots of food to choose from. The Snook were 20 some inches and probably 3-5 pounds- at least the ones I could land.

Slightly unnerving hearing some crashing fish out in the darker waters. I lost all of the bigger fish I hooked- was a little difficult to get the best of hook sets since you just drift the flies with a small strip every few seconds. Probably overpowered my 10 lb flouro leader trying to keep them away from the fender- which looked to spell certain doom for a leader.

As I was leaving I noticed a pickup heading down the road toward me. Within a couple hundred yards or so he turned his lights off. I still could make out that there were lights on the roof. It was a FL fish commission officer. It was the first one that has ever approached me in FL. He wanted to see if I kept any fish (Snook is out of season). I would'nt probably even if it was in season. Anyways, I finished up at about 10:30pm last night- good thing because my license expired in an hour and half.
Headed to Walmart for another one.

Saw birds of every shape in size, wild hogs,gators,lizards,turtles... its like wild kingdom there.

Awesome pics, I have to do some saltwater fly fishing this summer. I think your unknown fish is a toad fish aka oyster cracker.

last ones....

Sarasota is a beautiful place on the Southwest Coast of Florida.

Yeah I plan on taking my fly rod with me this summer when I head down to Florida. I'm staying in Vero Beach and will try my hand at the indian river, and the surf too. Went last year, but had NO clue what I was doing. Cast some clousers in the surf and had 3 hookups... all broke me off pretty quickly. I'll be a little bit more prepared this year and will hopefully have some pictures like you too show off... thanks for the update, I know a lot of us have been waiting for those pics... and thanks for the PAFLYFISH shout out on the last pic!

Edmo- thanks for the ID assist.

acris,
Awesome! I've been looking forward to these pics - great way to warm up a cold day. My guess is the mystery fish is a Gulf Toadfish. The photo labeled babysheepshead is actually a Pinfish. The photo further down does indicate a sheepshead - did you get him on a fly? Sheepshead on a fly is considered quite an accomplishment. And you gotta love cudas. IMO cudas are the most underrated game fish. I guess with the wealth of species in FL I suppose I can see why cudas are taken for granted or whacked for shark bait. They have sure saved a lot of days for me - I love 'em.
Thanks again.

FI- thanks for the ID on the pinfish. The sheepshead hit a crystal shrimp pattern on a coming tide in Sarasota Big Pass. I think I missed a couple other sheepheads with poor hook sets. He was a fighter - I got lucky on that one I guess. The baracuda hit the clousers hard. I missed several trout and redfish with less than ideal strip strikes.

Here's a local map.

Man am I envious. Looks like a great time. Cute bass family...love the snook and cudas.

Did you have any problems though after you put your reel in the sand? I would risk life and limb to keep my reel away from the "grit". Did yours handle it well?

D- No problems so far. Always good advice to keep'em clean- but I am pretty rough on equipment. Never been the retentive type. Shoulda stayed longer.

That's just it...I am super tough on my stuff too...I also used a Battenkill (but before they were large arbor) and sand was the only thing that could make me paranoid. Good deal if they found a way to minimize the effect of sand!!!
Again, great pics & nice fish!

The other unidentified looks like an inshore lizardfish. Did it have little spiky snake-like teeth? As far as the sheepshead go, I gotta agree, they are tough on a fly rod. The last time I was down the rock wall by the place we stayed was loaded with them and in a week I hooked zero, even though you could see them eating, they would just refuse every fly I offered. My brother and I did real well with them on shrimp out at point-of-rocks. We released some hogs only to find out later that they are one of the tastiest fish in the sea. As far as those pinfish go, those things are magic up to about 5 inches. They've gotta be the best bait down there. Everything eats them and they sell for like 2 bucks a piece even though they are everywhere. The pic title "sarasota bay sunset" was nice to see. I've been told that before they developed the land to the left that that flat used to be one of the best places in the state to fish. I've done very well across the bay under the bridge. We hammered Spanish Mackerel there one year. Great report and great pics. Thanks for warming up this fine January day!

B- guess I did get lucky with the sheepshead- there mouths are filled with teeth like molars. Guess I just stripped it right- since I got at least 5 other hits from them and missed the rest.

Had several other needlenosed smallish fish hit the clouser many times and hooked a few of those as well but their needlenosed mouths did'nt hold hooks well. Slender and maybe 8-10 inches long.

You guys are good at fish ID.

Still looking for my first Redfish and Tarpon- hopefully get an opportunity to fish for them.

Florida- the land where everything bites and stings.

Boyer- opps for got to answer. I just used my hand to get the fly loose and did not see inside the fishes mouth to tell.

I think what you are talking about are needle fish. Those are tough to hook. We got into some big ones in the keys one year. They get kinda scary when they hit the two foot mark. Apparently they are fairly closely related to gar. You gotta love the salt, every trip is a biology lesson.

PS My version of the Florida motto is "Florida, where everything has teeth and would like to kill you"

Thanks for sharing Paul. Looks like a nice time. I'm going to visit the big mouse May 29 to June 2. I doubt I'll get to do any saltwater, but I think I will try for some largemouths at the canals by Fort Wilderness Lodge. I've got a nice deerhair bassbug in Steeler colors from our friend David that I'd like to try.

Al- it was great, wish I was still there. The bass fishing seems much easier than what we have to deal with here in PA. You will have a great time I am sure. Think they have peacocks at Disney.
