Youghiogheny River, Somerset County, 6-26-2022

Fished the Yough Sunday from 2 pm to 8pm with fellow board members, Albatross and Andrew. Overcast skies and air temps in the 70's were too tempting to pass. River was as low as i have seen it with CFS around 700 and dropping. It was a productive day. Albatross caught a fish within minutes of hitting the water. Small #18 caddis where the ticket to start. We both managed to get a few on emerger patterns and I caught my 1st ever West Virginia Lightning Trout on a Dry fly. As the day progressed sluphers and cahills started popping and a few fish were caught on those as well. Fishing were rising steadily all afternoon with the trouts moving on to "Drunella cornuta" - Albatross could have just yelled "they are taking Big Blue Wing Olives to me instead. ISO's were in the mix as well. It was an excellent day on the Yough and it was bug soup. Albatross has really upped his tying skills and gave me several of his ties to use and they work well for sure. Brought the char broil as well and burned some dogs for a late day snack.

The Yough is a love hate kinda place - yesterday i was in love with it.

My kids have been making fun of me for years about having never caught a Lightning Trout - well that skunk is off 🙂

I don't have a problem with those. I look at them as a novelty and it's cool to catch one every now and again. You won't find me partaking in WV's "Gold Rush" 🙂

I've caught a few palominos in the Yough before.
So yeah, I guess they do tend to rise there.
Maybe because its such a big stream, and they're not as spooky?

I had some thoughts of bike fishing down there sunday.
But the forecast was calling for severe thunderstorms.
And I didn't want to get caught on my bike in that

Great getting out with Bruno and Andrew. The Yough has been fun this summer. Pretty reliable rising fish, but it seems the bug the fish are targeting varies, trip to trip and even hour to hour.

I fished there today, caught 5, one on a streamer, one on a dry and 3 on a flashback pheasant tail.

I've got to give a shout out to pa fly co. fly shop for the tip about the pheasant tails!
