Youghiogheny River, Fayette & Somerset Counties, 6/23/2012

StudentOfTheStream, Skybay, and I floated the middle Yough Saturday. We launched about 8 AM and took out just after 7 PM. Water temps were mid to high 50s. Morning fog gave way to bluebird sunny skies. We saw sporadic slate drakes and Cahills come off. The drakes briefly got some fish rising late in the afternoon, and this provided our best trout fishing of the day. We caught many smallmouth in the deeper holes with sink tip lines and streamers.

We caught some trout and quite a few smallies. Craig and Jared were fine company to share the day. All in all a most excellent adventure.

I hope it's not too bold for me to assume that since there are no pictures of you in the pontoon you bought from me at the jam that you survived the trip?

Look closely behind that fine bronzeback and you can see a sliver of the fine craft I bought from you.

I did survive. The boat was great. I had a few issues with the seat moving and the oar locks moving. Nothing that a small toolkit couldn't have solved, and I'll be sure to have a toolkit along for the next outing (next Saturday).

all I can say is: GET DEEP!

I worked everything from the bank but it wasn't until I was on the floor (12' down) that I landed anything.

We did see several hundred rafters and yakers, a goodly number of them bikini clad...

Make sure you have scorecards. The girls will enjoy that, unless of course you give them a low score.

I also had a great time on the trip. Very enjoyable float with great company and a few fish to add to the fun. Watching skybay maneuver his 'barge' through some of the heavier rapids was very entertaining as well. He kept it upright all day so kudos to his excellent oarsmanship.

It was immensely great Saturday.

Greg and Craig are fine anglers and well-prepared “floaters”.
Sorry for not showing the picture of the most spectacular rainbow Greg caught.
In the short and tantalizing moments of landing the trophy I almost dropped all of the gear to the bottom of the river and missed the camera’s setting with my trembling hands.

This fight is not totally lost, it is well embedded and burn in our brains and was the brightest moment of the float.
The nice rainbow Craig caught was the proof of the top fly fishing skills and river’s careful observation. He is not a student he is a pro.

The fish caught on this trip with dry (Adams, Slate Drakes, Caddis, Green Wulffs, Royal Wulffs ) variety of streamers and nymphs (black stone flies, golder stone, Copper Johns)
Make a simple; you have to have them all!
Mine bass of the nice size was caught using brown streamer, 8# hook.
I waded with my Simms, bottom felt summer sandals.

Lots of bikinis on the water, this makes your trip even more joyful.
So if you not focus on your “dead drift” you may miss a few but who counts when you happy…

Finally got to meet StudentoftheStream a few weeks back. I can't imagine meeting Skybay and Albatross in the same trip. I think I'd leave the board after that encounter! lol jk.


Looks like a nice trip. Wish I could have made it.
