Saturday marked the latest attempt to unravel the mystery, that is the Yough. Joined by Albatross and former board member Andrew, we started our float at roughly 7:30 AM.
With a fairly constant water temp of 59 Deg F, but a strong flow of approx 1900 CFS, I was hopeful that we could boat some of the river’s strong fighting fish.
There are two things that Alby is known for; Catching large fish and breaking fly rods. It took less than a minute for him to display his ability, sadly it wasn’t with a quick fish!
Both Andrew and Alby started quickly to boat a few smallies, but the trout were proving to be their typical, hard to catch, selves. Thru the occasional showers, we pounded the banks, and midstream structure with streamers, and buggers, but to little success.
Although there were a few olives around the fairly heavy rubber hatch kept the bigger pools devoid of the rising trout we’d hoped to find. As the day wore on, swallows showed a lot of activity over the faster water. Close observation confirmed decent numbers of Isos were emerging. And quickly, Alby proved his talent, by bringing two stunning rainbows to net!
Despite the tough sledding in the fish catching department, this trip was still enlightening. We continue to build on our knowledge of the river, and the company, for me, was top notch! Thanks go out to Andrew and Albatross for sharing a good day on the water!
