Fished the river from the town of Confluence downstream to Ram Cat Run put-in. Arrived at 4:00 and fished til 8:00 pm.
WEATHER: Mostly cloudy, breezy, highs in low to mid 60's.
WATER CONDITIONS: Flow rate 750 cfs., clear with slight green tint, temp at 4:00 was around 60 degrees. They will be increasing flow today, 6/30, by 230 cfs... so total flow for the holiday weekend will be in the 900 - 950 cfs range. (Rafting trumps flyfishing every time.)
BUGS: A bit of everything. A lot of nothing. Saw caddis in a variety of sizes, big slate drakes, BWO size 16s and 18s, a few cahills size 16 and 14, and tons of midges of course. Cicadas are done.
FISH: Caught 6 very nice bows, all on top--4 on a slate drake para-dun and 2 on a size 14 cinnamon caddis. Missed a few more. Getting slow in my old age.
I knew the USACE would up the flows for the weekend rafters on Thursday, so I blew out of work early and put in a few hours. As much as I hate fishing the Yough on many days, I still love it. Yesterday it was a love fest. 6 fish on this river is a good day for me, a dry fly snob. The water was perfect for dry fly fishing, as good as the Yough can be anyway. I think the cloudy, windy conditions helped a lot. I was able to approach rising fish on the flat waters sections much closer than I normally would without putting them down or scaring them off.
