Up early and fished the Yough starting below where the Casselman dumps. I probably made it about two miles downstream from there fishing everything that would fit my tandem streamer rig. My friend and I had success early landing about a 15-16 in. brown, a decent smallmouth and two 14 in. rainbows. All were had on a 5 in. Circus Peanut variation with a wool head stripped fast and high in the water column. Really a fun way to fish.
I just purchased a new setup. 8wt rod with a 10wt Access mid arbor reel and a 250 grain sinking line (30 ft head). It was perfect, handled two big flies and some seriously long roll casting.
My friend is relatively new to fly fishing , but has picked it up beautifully. A lot of times I'll just watch him fish, give my critique, praise, whatever. Towards 11am we find a run and I let him cast first. Second cast in there and he hooks the largest brown he's ever seen. He estimated more than two feet. Coming from a guy who always undervalues the size of fish I consider this a value estimate. It hit very close to the surface. Two seconds later and it broke off taking the fly too. Both of us were a state of shock... #censor#, did that really just happen? Well it did and I made sure to bug him about it for the entire day.
We finished by driving up to Ohiopyle and walking up the railroad tracks. fished about another hour. Nothing.
Insect activity was minimal as we got rained on for most of the trip. believe it or not I saw more Dobson adults than anything else. i did hear some cicadas, but they were minimal. More importantly, I heard them driving back on Route 51... they were EVERYWHERE. I expect they'll be in the Cedar Creek stretch.
The Yough is beautiful, fickle, and powerful but also a complete tease. Some days make you wonder if there are any trout in there. Other days are magnificent, like today.

The Yough is such an enigma.

I live in Westmoreland County, have fished the Yough for decades and either - catch 20 fish or get skunked.

I will preface my comment by saying I only fished the Yough one time, and it was a long time ago (saw enough...just kidding, you're lucky to have a tailwater to fish)

But I fish and have fished the other bigger tailwaters in the State like the Lehigh and the Delaware (hey, I'll even throw the Tully in there).

When you see stuff like the graph below, abrupt and significant changes in flow and often temp, it puts fish down for a while, and when they begin to adapt....zoop!...it changes again.

If you can fish it when it remains stable for more than a few days, your "luck" always seems to get better.

My 2 on the Yough.

I don't get it.......with streamers at least. I have yet to connect in there with circus peanut, sex dungeon, muddy buddy, double bunny, tube flies or any streamer. I did row the boat and net streamer fish for others but still Zippo for me. I've caught some solid fish on nymphs and dries. I'll get back on the horse, try it again but think I'm reading the water poorly and missing the good lies.

Are you coming to the Jam this weekend? I can give you my 2 pennies. I'm a big Kelly Galloup fan. I think his streamer info is gold. Even though most of his information relates to experiences on the Madison (one of the coolest rivers I've had the pleasure to fish), there is a lot of carry over to the Yough.

What color peanut Sid? I've had great luck with bright flashy silver streamers on the Yough more often than more traditional colorations.

All fish were taken on a green with black rubber legs. I changed color a lot at first but I was getting full commits from those colors... anything overly flashy were just getting follows or swipes.

Was planning on jam but dogsitter issues. I can only get sitter for Friday so I'll be there Friday for recon float with DaveS. I have bugger barn sized box with 75+ streamers. I have 2 streamer dedicated rods and 3 lines with various length sink tips / IPS sink rates. I've it a pretty good grasp on what I'm doing ......just have had shiit luck tossing junk on that river. Lol. That's about it.

Colors used: CP in white, black/red, black/green, olive, olive/black, natural/orange, crayfish. SD colors: black, brown/yellow, olive. Tubes in various colors, MB in black, rust, white. One swipe and one 11" smallmouth.
