Yough river, Fayette County, 8/22/10

Was on the river above Ohiopyle by 7 and glad I was the action was fast and short in duration. I caught about 20 dinks, all under 8 inches, but it was nice to see my friend catch his first couple fly rod trout. Most were wild, I think, with only a few stockies. Dinks aside, I caught 6 more trout between 12 and 15 inches. All fish were caught on a size 12 yellow stimmy and a size 14 tan caddis emerger. All in all it was a great day on the water and it was special to see my friend enjoy the fly fishing as much as did. Btw I just bought the Patagonia sticky rubber river walking wading boots and I must say it was worth all 160 dollars, I stuck to those rocks like glue.

I'm thinking the dinks you got into may have been stocked fingerlings. Particularly in that area. But who knows...still sounds like a good day on what can be a tough piece of water.

It's a surprise there aren't more wild bow streams around the Yough aside from the few that exist. I know Meadow is loaded with those finglerlings by October...

Ha! It's all an angling myth anyway. A few straggling browns at the mouth of a crick is far from a fall "run" of monster piscivorous fish that one imagines. I've been chasing this mysterious migration for decades across various parts of the state. I've come to the conclusion that -- outside of the great lakes tribs -- it doesn't really exist in any tangible sense.
