Fishwagon and myself drove out to meet Mkerr in Confluence. The river was clear with the lake release being in the upper 50's. We started out in the morning following a guide and his buddy. While we were getting rigged, they caught 8 fish or so.
Floated / rowed from Confluence to Ohiopyle. The morning was fairly calm and overcast. The afternoon was puffy clouds and upriver winds of 15-20 with higher gusts. A one man boat in that river is a bit tough to fish out of on a calm day.....on a windy day, forget it. Add to that the amount of leaf litter that found its way into the river and it was a bit of a mess.
In between gusts, Mkerr hooked up on the fish of the day which was a 19" bow that took some type of secret nymph that he wouldn't disclose. We pulled over a few times rather than fight the wind. During one of the breaks, there were quite a few small olives on the water but you'd never see a rise in the whitecaps that were rolling up river.
As the wind died in the last 90 minutes of the day, we did see some bright yellow mayflies which I'm assuming were some color phase of a steno and a few caddis as light faded. In the tail of one pool, we spotted a few rises. The bubble line had been replaced by a leaf line which mad spotting the sippers difficult and made it harder for them to find your fly. Once we got closer, the few rises turned out to be 25-35 fish. Most were little bows. I did catch 1 brown in that pool and FIshwagen got surprised when what he thought was a dink turned out to be a much larger fish that promptly got loose.
I was just nice to get out this time of year with only a light jacket. Beautiful place and almost some real good fishing. Wind got us this time.
