I walked downstream a little ways from Ramcat Sunday afternoon/evening. The cold front had not passed yet and the air was hot and sticky. The water wasn't as refreshing as I've grown accustomed to, about 68F. I saw some of those huge stonefly nymph shucks that FlyFishermanJ had noted on Meadow Saturday. I fished a #6 rubberlegs stonefly imitation for a while and did have one brief hook-up (pretty sure it was a trout). Other than the one hook-up I got completely skunked. I think it was Shreck who said to leave the Yough alone till October. I wish I had taken his advice. Fortunately these unpleasant flyfishing outings are few and far between!
 
I had a similar experience Saturday. I think my great day a couple weeks ago there was related to the heavy rains. I fished a couple days after the rains and had lots of action but not much since. I got 68 degrees again at ramcat midday. The only good thing is the wet wading has been perfect.
 
I'm going to do as, I believe it was Schrec, said, and leave the Yough be until the weather cools down, probably not unti Oct.
That's usually when things start picking up again anyway, with the autumn olives hatching

I just said I wasn't going until October. There can be some great fishing in September on the Yough. Watch the weather and the flow reports. Both mornings and evenings can be good. But when October comes, there can be some HUGE surprises on the river and its tribs.

Looks like things should be picking up on the Yough sooner, rather than later, with the cold front that went thru yesterday.
And it's supposed to stay cool for the next few days now.
I really wish the USGS would fix that temp gauge at the ohio pyle station though, so I could check the water in that area. It's been down most of the summer. I e-mailed them about it, and they replied a few days later - said that they do plan on getting it fixed eventually. We'll see
 
Yough is really warming up according to the USGS site readings. I also saw in the paper that the reason for the big draw down or low releases (depending on how you want to look at it) was so the kayakers could run the falls for their one day a year.
 
22 C is 72 F. Don' fish the Yough right now!
