Yellow Creek, Bedford County 2/28/15

Fished the FFO section of Yellow Creek today from 10 to 3 pm. It was sunny and in the mid 20s. Started the day out my stepping into to the stream and seeing a bald eagle take off only 30 yards from me. Caught 3 Browns and 2 rainbows.

Hooked a nice brown(~18-19) but didn't get it to hand, and had a lot of subtle hits and misses as well. Saw a lot of fish and insects (scuds, alive and dead, and mayfly and stone nymph dead on the ice). Overall a nice day.

Sounds like you had some open water there to fish - in spite of the recent bone chilling temps.
However, I'm curious about the dead insect life you saw on the ice.
Were they BWO's and stoneflies?
And did you see anything hatching on the open water?

The mayflies were probably bwo nymphs. These bugs were dead and kind of washed onto the thin ice partiality submerged in the water. Never did see and insects in the air.

Yellow creek is usually the first place I fish to start the new season. And I'm hoping to get out there soon.

Last year I went out there right about this same time. It was a warm spring day, and I was really looking forward to a good time on the water.
Unfortunately, there was still a lot of snow around there. And a lot of it melted - raising the stream level, and murking up the water pretty good.
I caught zilch that day.

Glad you had some luck out there. It was completely frozen over last weekend. Glad to hear its fishable now though.
