Yellow Creek/ Bedford County/ 11-17-2013

Fished Yellow Creek yesterday for approx 6 hours from 7:30 to 1:30. I stayed in the lower third of the project water.


Picked a decent amount of fish underneath, mostly on a yellow yarn egg or a 18 PT flashback. Caught a few more on top with a little cdc olive emerger reminiscent of a Charlie Craven Mole fly.

Most exciting part of the day was 20 inch + (by 20 inch plus I am being conservative in deference to the thread about 30 inch browns on the main page) brown that T-boned the 10 inch fish I caught on a mole fly.

All in all a good day, weather conditions were nice and cloudy...BWO activity was sparse but enough to bring a few to the top.

It is real exciting to have an encounter of a large fish crushing your catch. I have had it happen with Muskie, Smallmouth and Brown...all at close range

Yellow creek is one of the limestone streams I have yet to fish, and hear that it even has a good green drake hatch, and that the wild trout population is rising pretty well. Do you think that this will be a wild trout only fishery in the near future?

Only if sufficient people advocate for that. Stocking is very popular on that creek. But, this is one of the rare exceptionally fertile streams that can acclimate to stocking so long as it isn't excessive. And I guess that could start a whole new debate.

did a survey about that last year....i highly doubt that it will ever not be stocked...the upper portion only gets rainbow trout and the fly area only gets about 600 trout a year, but hey the big browns need to eat right 🙂

One of the hands down best streams. I would like to see it go wild trout only, but as stated above, doubt it'll happen.

But I do agree, it is a stream capable of supporting the stocking alongside an amazing wild trout population.

Lots of posted water on this stream, but it yields some giant browns, and I think that is one of the reasons.
