FIshed below Allenberry from 6-8 pm tonight, looking to get into the tail end of the white fly hatch.

Air temp was 74*, water temp was 67*, water clear and low.

Really strong hexagenia hatch lasted from 7:15 to 7:45 and then the white fly hatch kicked in.

And not a single rise the entire time. There were numerous other fisherman out also, and I didn’t see anyone catch anything.

The stretch that I was fishing I am well familiar with and in other white fly hatches, the water would almost boil with rises. Again, not a single rise.

Only thing I can think of is that the warner water temps pushed the fish into the spring areas and into the deeper holes. They certainly were not holding in the riffles and runs that they typically would be this time of year.

There are no longer any "deeper holes" in the regulated water behind Allenberry. In my opinion it started when they reconstructed that section. The deeper holes ( the castle pool, pavilion pool, and the pool just below the dam, are gone. 100 yards above the dam the water is ok in the spring usually do to the spring rains. If you fish up there now any fish that rise is easy prey to the herons. I was there 2 weeks ago and saw 4 herons pick off 3 fish in 1 hour. Also the lower water table from all the upstream building. That stream will not see the hatches of even 10 years ago i.e. tricos, tan caddis, sulphurs.

At dusk last night, I worked my way up towards the dam, before heading out. I thought someone was fishing immediately below the dam, but it was one of the largest heron I have ever seen. Had absolutely no fear of humans.

You are right about the water below the dam. I know their was additional structure added, and a decent run on the far bank, but nothing that would qualify as a pool that can offer protection from both predator and temperature.

Stream improvements, be careful what you wish for!!!!
