I had this day penciled in for fishing for about a month. Then came the rains and washed out what plans I did have. I needed a few things so I decided to fish the Breeches and stop in at the fly shop. My fall back plan was Big Spring but as it turns out, I didn't need it.
My son and I arrived at the run about 9:30 with overcast skies and crystal clear water. There were two teenage anglers fishing who said they were not having much luck. I started with a #18 cdc caddis with a #18 olive pheasant tail dropper and quickly started catching fish. At this point, the takes were split fairly evenly between the two flies.
As the day proceeded, more anlgers started arriving and I decided to work my way down to the main branch, just to see how high it was. There was a nice delineation between the cold clear water from the run and the warm muddy water of the main branch. I was able to walk this "seam" and pick up three fish on the dry before heading back up.
By now there were about 7-8 anglers fishing the run and the sun had come out. The air temperature was in the upper 70's to low 80's by now. I took a break then decided to nymph the splash pool for fun. I started with a #16 scud and nothing was happening then switched to a green weenie. First cast and I lost a large rainbow after it pulled the hook in the strong current. I ended up *** hooking several others and losing a few more. My son then took over and caught his first trout on a fly rod. Maybe now he won't think it is so hard to do.
Gradually the other anglers left by 3:30 or 4:00. I had some really exciting fishing after that. I went back to the dry/dropper set up and sight fished three larger fish ranging between 15 and 17 inches. The largest was hiding under and overhanging bush requiring a perfectly placed cast to get to him.
It was a nice day to be and one to definately boost my confidence. After not fishing much this year its good to know that I can still bring 'em in.
