Had to get away from the special regulation area after an incident Friday night. Found peace and solitude fishing upstream. Managed a few 8" wild browns on flashback brassie. Not much surface action. The water was skinny and the fish were very spooky. My fly got caught on submerged pine cone. When I raised it to the surface it was covered with what I assumed were scuds. They were tiny and I am not sure how I could tie something that small. Nice day to be on the water unmolested.

Maybe tie small Walts worm imitations in tan, olive and gray.

I have found that with scuds, the size does not matter to an extent. for example,if what you saw was say....size 20, if you got even remotely close, 14, 16 ish and the color was spot on, the fish aren't too picky. so if its smaller than what you can tie, just go as small as you can and try it out.

I do a ton of stream sampling with my high school kids and we generally find an array of sizes of scuds even in tiny streams. A fly a bit larger should still do the trick. I really do well with avid patterns on the breeches. Breeches go to list: red/pink San Juan, scud, pheasant tail. Also big soft hackles swung when there are larger emergers.
