I happened to be at a work site this week along the Breeches in an area with a strong Brood X cicada hatch. I had tied a few up intending to chase bass and carp with them, but the emergence has been spotty, so I only found a good still water to hit this summer.
I was worried about the water temps, so I went early, on the water at 6am. Temperature read 60° on my thermometer in a shallow riffle. Fish on! Sporadic risers and an occasional caddis or cicada spinner hitting the water.
I had many splashy hits and refusals all morning. My tie was on a #8 streamer hook. I should have sized down and I would have caught a few dozen smaller trout and chubs. Still I managed double digits on some very aggressive takes in a little under three hours. Almost all takes and refusals were within a second of splashdown.
One exception was a gorgeous buttery brown (pic 2 at link) that was roughly 18” on the tape. He positively sipped the fly in a blow down in such a way that I thought it might have been a little fish. On the set it was clearly a chunk. Took some drag and made for a longer fight than expected. After a quick pic and release I checked water temp again. It read 65°. Fished my way back down to my car sticking a couple more and called it a morning.
