Today was the ant fest. Caught a nice brown on an orange glo blug but then nothing. Tried various beetles until I put on a red ant.Bingo! The action was pretty good until the sulphurs appeared. Took a few on on an emerger then called it quits. Only bad part of the day was when my reel fell in 4 1/2 ft of water and had to get inventive for the retrieval.
other than that a good day of fishing.

Good report.
It has always seemed to me that terrestrial season begins earlier (and ends later in the year) than many anglers realize. This is particularly true after a few days of very warm weather followed by windy conditions that really shook up the trees such as we recently experienced. More than once in April or May, when I have been unable to stick a fussy fish that appeared to be eating mayflies or caddis or midges.....a well presented terrestrial sealed the deal.

I had an experience on a local SE PA stream yesterday that I never saw before. I was walking up the stream and came to a nice pool. As I was approaching I saw 2 birds flying in and out of the stream side grasses. I watched because I was fascinated by this play and after about a minute the tail of the pool came alive with rising fish. I guess those birds were creating an ant fest for me although I was too stubborn to change from my nymph and on my first cast, spooked the crap out of them. Oh well, lesson learned.

Outside of the white fly hatch, I think you only need three other flies in your possession when fishing the breeches. Size 18 winged cinnamon ant (Not sure if the fish care about the wings, but I like them), Size 18 tan caddis and size 14 sulphur. Yea, I might have a couple different sizes of Adams to cover everything else, but those three flies mentioned usually does it.
