Yellow Breeches, Cumberland County, 4/12/15

I fished the Yellow Breeches on Sunday. I drove to the upper parking lot and it looked like a three ring circus going on, so I drove down behind the playhouse and there were not a lot of guys fishing (relatively speaking for the Breeches that is).

I fished above the dam. I caught fish, but there was not a lot of fish surface feeding, which surprised me because there were about three different flies hatching in considerable numbers.

When I got there, mid morning, there were a lot of grannom caddis on the water (# 14 brown wing with an olive/brown body and green egg sack). by about 1 pm I started seeing mobe black stone flies (#16 grey wing, black body) and less grannoms. then, around 3 started seeing Hendricksons in fair numbers (#14 redish body with dark dun wings.

As I said, the rises were very sporadic all day. I caught fish on droppers under all three flies.

I was on the open water much further down, in the afternoon. Hendricksons everywhere, but not a single riser. I even threw nymphs and wets, to no avail. The worm drowners I passed by said they weren't catching anything either.

Had the same situation at Spring Creek yesterday, hardly any action goin on.

Same thing on the Brandywine. I was above the regs. section and fished super hard for three trout in a few hours, by far my least productive outing. Also olled or missed at least twice that many. There were Tan and Gray caddis, and early Black Stones everywhere, but no risers. Found out the local put and take club had stocked the day before which explained why the fish were so spooky, especially since I started around 3 on a beautiful Sun.

The Brandywine trout club does not stock above the regs section for about a half mile. Same with the PFBC. The trout do move during high water periods. You would have been better off fishing all the likely spots. Really not a lot of pressure on the stream for just being stocked.

Actually I was more than a half mi. above the fly stretch and there were plenty of tout; I covered a lot of good holding water and saw plenty of fish. Moved the truck, so I hit two completely different ares. There was plenty of pressure where I ended up, but a little walking put me in some very nice water by myself. Don't want to high jack the thread, just pointing out I had tough fishing considering the abundance of bugs as mentioned above.

Yesterday I fished some of the upper water on the YB and towards the end of the day I decided to go to the parking area by the Children's lake to maybe fish another hour.

There are probably at least parking for 25 vehicles and they were all taken except for one spot which I took. There were eight guys fishing the spring (or whatever that tiny stream is called) One guy was standing on the bank with a tackle box on the ground and a spin cast rod in his hand. I thought that was FFO water?

When I first retired in 2005 I was ahead of the baby boomers getting ready to retire. I had about seven years of encountering very few other guys on the waters I fish. The last two I noticed many more guys fly fishing during the week. But so far in 2015 I'm seeing far more guys than ever before.

It's called "the Run" and is managed as artificial lures only with C&R (it used to be FFO but this was changed about thirty years ago). It is common to see kids and folks fishing it with spin gear. It is almost always crowded there and throughout the reg water on YB.

Interesting observation regarding increased angling pressure. I have (generally) seen the opposite and am convinced that there were a lot more fishermen in the 80s/90s than today, including on Breeches (some friends of mine who are Breeches regulars and know it better than I do believe that YB gets more pressure today than in the past).
