Yellow Breeches, Cumberland Co. 8/29/2011

Hit the Breeches above Allenberry at about 3 PM. Water was in perfect condition. However the fish were not interested in much. Fished down through the fast water to the slow, deeper water. Only one other guy fishing in the deep water. He left at about 5 and I was the only person fishing that I could see. Caught a couple nymphing in the deep water near the "pipe". Decided to go after the bigger fish. Tied on a large cone head black leach. Had several of the big boys chase it, but not grabs. Then I cast over and down, bouncing the bottom and bam. A large fish grabs it and takes off towards the dam. I brought him back and saw him roll, looked like a large brownie. But the pic will show what bit...not bad for 6X tippet and a 4 wt.............On my walk back up to the parking lot I cast the large leach in a couple of spots and landed a nice 15" bow and a nice brownie. Also had about half dozen fish chase the leach but refused at the last second.........A fun day was had by all......

Thats a pretty big fly to be chugging with 6x, bet that doesnt turn over well

Guys, I use Drennan floro tippet. The 6x is rated at 3lb test and is the strongest tippet I've ever used. In NY I use the Drennan in 6lb test all fall. Last year, while in a FF torny, I landed a 25+ lb salmon with the 6lb. I think it's a little stiffer than normal but I have had good luck with it. Even on a clear stream like Clarks it works great.The only down side is that it's made in Canada and a little hard to find. Thank God for the internet.

3# for 6X is pretty common. Rio 6X in the hi end fluoro is 3.6#. Still hard to imagine you being able to cast, and turn over, a big conehead. Would think it would break the tippet on the snap or strike.

@wbranch, I used that same piece of tippet for about 45 min. Never had a problem with flies breaking off and no problems casting. Could be my excellent cast skills though. 🙂

well, it obviously works for ya, bet that was a fun catch! I might of seen that fish cruising up out of the deeper water when I was there Saturday on the same stretch. Considered drifting a fly to him, but thought better of it, wasn't rigged for that pursuit at all.

That is a hell of a fish on a 4wt with 6X. Almost like bringing a knife to a gunfight! You landed him, so kuddos to you!
