Yellow Breeches, Cumberland Co, 5/6/14

I made the drive to Boiling Springs last evening to fish the C&R for a couple of hours.

The water was still a bit high from the rains last week/weekend. I was a little less comfortable crossing it than usual. My thermometer read 62 which seemed a little high so I need to confirm its accuracy.

There were a few mayflies coming off, though not many and not many risers. I didn't get a close look but I'm guessing hendricksons? From a distance they appeared mostly gray. I'm pretty certain they weren't sulfurs. I never saw a bug taken off the top so I'm guessing the fish I saw rising were sipping emergers.

I only managed to bring in a couple of browns, lost 4-5, and missed several. The first one I picked up was on a Yellow Para-Adams. The second on a Bead Head Pheasant Tail. I spent far too long trying to deceive 3 or 4 trout in a small eddy on the edge the far bank. They were in a pocket maybe 3' x 6' in size and rising constantly. There was no way I could get a clean drift over them but I couldn't help myself.

Were the risers behind the twig-jam in the second picture? Nice colors with that, by the way.

Thanks. The pocket of risers were upstream of that about 50 yards or so. The one I caught on top was about 10 feet downstream from that twig-jam, though.

I really like fishing from that log jam up about 150 yds.

I'm taking a few of my students there tomorrow to release a few trout for our Trout in the Classroom project - I can report the temp and pH when we return. FWIW, last Wednesday (during the monsoon) the Run was at 52 degrees with the pH at 9.0.

The last 2 miles of the Yellow Breeches looks awesome. I've only driven in the area a few times across the bridges. Even when passing over it on the TP, upstream and down look nice! Think big smallies, browns, muskies, OH MY! Sure would be nice to float that out into the susky! Anyone know that stretch and are willing to float it after the regs end?
