Yellow Breeches, Cumberland Co. 5/2/2011

Went over to the Breeches Monday afternoon. According to stream guage it was running around 900. The water was clearing, but still a little too high to wade very far from the bank. Fished the regs section above the dam. Managed three with a black bunny leach and one with a white maribou streamer. Lost a couple more.

On Tuesday I took a ride over to the flyshop to get acouple of things. After I went over to the Run, not to fish just wanted to check it out. The first thing not one fisherman, suprising, I walked up and down the Run twice and did not see a fish.

I talked to one of the regs, he wasn't fishing either. He told me that their aren't any fish and that why the lack of fishermen. He wasn't a happy man!

Paul, for the last 2 years the run has had very few fish in it. Nobody seems to know why, but everyone has an idea. I think the stocking in the run has been reduced drastically. Some say that kids and others poaching, some say the herons. One thing, I have a book by the Becks and she is pictured fishing in the run. It was taken so long ago that the nice size tree along the stream right in from of the little pavillion is not even there, but the stream has alot more water in it that is normal flows now. This problem has got to hurt business at the fly shop. Personally, I never fished the run much, but it kept some guys off the real stream. But as word spreads about the lack of fish, guys go somewhere else...I think it's a shame that this is happening.....The lack of fish also coinsided with the removal of all the high plants that were growing all along the run....................Biggie

I never fished the Run much myself. I know a lot of the older guys, that use to fish it all the time. It was a good place for them because some couldn't fish the main stream anymore, I feel sorry for these guys.

The guy I talked to the other day, has been fishing the Run for years. He says the main reason for lack of fish is the stocking, they won't put the fish in there anymore, along with some other problems he told me about. It's a darn shame!

I was able to hit the Breeches yesterday in the late afternoon out in the ATW. The stream is still flowing above normal and a bit stained...but fishable. Nymphs did the trick although I only caught a few smallish rainbows.

Yeah, the Run doesn't seem to be improving. They are stocking it but the fish aren't holding there anymore (I still think it has something to do with the lake drawdowns). The last couple times I've checked it out there have been very few or no fishermen. Five years ago the Run was probably the most heavily fished section of trout water in SC PA.
And yes, it's been tough on the fly shop.
