Yellow Breeches, Cumberland Co, 5/1/24

Spent the evening on the Breeches, anticipating some sulphurs. Managed a few nice browns on #14 pheasant tail nymphs. Did not see any mayfly activity at all besides what may have been a lone March Brown or Grey Fox. Approximately #12. A few trout were rising sporadically for the little tan caddis that were fluttering around, but that was it for surface activity. Grannoms and Hendricksons were pretty much a bust this year. Hoping these sulphurs get cranking soon. Regardless, it was a beautiful evening on the water, and I can never complain about that.

I fished a section along Creek Rd, then moved up to the artificial section between the lake and Allenberry. The stringer guys must be keeping after them. Didn't even roll a fish on Creek Rd. Fishing was much better in the C&R section which is usually the polar opposite for me.

I fished it 5/2 and also saw almost no surface activity, I couldn’t buy a strike on a dry fly.

I don't know about Southcentral Sulphurs because I've always fished down there from Memorial Day weekend onward...

But further north where I live, this is still a bit early for Sulphurs.

I would usually agree, but folks are already seeing decent sulphur hatches on the Little J and other central PA streams further north.

Little tan caddis have been the only decent hatch of the year, imo.

Last year was a bust for Sulphurs on the Breeches. This is the first time in over 40 years that I could count the number of Sulphers on one hand in over 30 plus days of fishing in May-June. However there was a decent Gray Fox hatch during May last year. I have seen a few Gray Fox within the last week below BS. Normal timing for our Sulphurs is from the Second week of May until the first week of June. I have seen a few Sulphurs a week prior and a week later but never in large numbers or any consistency.

I finally got into good sulphur action on Monday. Flies started coming off around noon, but sporadically. Did well on nymphs through the afternoon. Around 4 pm the hatch picked up significantly and fish finally started looking up. Switched to an emerger pattern and picked up six fish and missed a few more in a short period of time before it ended abruptly again. Still, it was a blast to pick up some fish on top again. I imagine yesterday was also good, but I didn't make it out.

There were a hand full of Sulphurs last evening,.combined with a few Caddis and a half dozen Gray Fox a few fish rose sporadically.. Mainly spinners coming back and the fish were rising hard when they did come up.

Plenty of Grayfox spinners with some duns and a few Sulphur duns on the lower breeches tonight. It was 85 deg. today so everything happened the last 45 minutes prior to dark.
