Yellow Breeches, Cumberland, 3/11/13

Traveling south during the course of the day and was able to spend a couple of hours on Yellow Breeches in the afternoon.

Conditions were mild with air temps in the mid to upper 50's and overcast. Water was very clear and 50 degrees. It had been sunny and mild the previous two days.

I was hoping for some hatches to come off and conditions seemed right. Really not much surface activity to speak of except for a few caddis and a couple risers. It was enough for me to try some dry fly fishing and had a little luck.

I recently suffered a "mini stroke" resulting in double vision and the necessity to wear an eye patch. Against the wishes of she who is in charge, I decided that having one eye and not having been fishing for months, there was no reason not to hit the stream. I decided to try the Breeches.

Crossing below the run was a little tricky but I made it and it built my confidence. Shortly after taking what seemed like hours to change flies, I was able to land a nice Brownie.

My confidence now in full bloom, I wondered on down to just about the culvert. Using my staff as the current was a tad bit stronger than I had anticipated, you guessed it. In an instant, there` I was, rod in one hand staff in the other, doing the worst backstroke imaginable and after what seemed like swimming the length of an olympic pool, I was able to reach shore.


My report is as follows. My internal thermometer indicated that the water temp was well below Zero and the current was 300mps.

The only thing worse than the dunking was the "I told you so".

Sorry to hear your story, but don't give up! Just be more careful, fish more from the bank and always fish with a friend. Good luck.

Hey Joe by all means don't give up. When you feel the itch again give me a shout I would have no problem meeting you on the stream to lend a hand.

I am sure it will get better for you. I have to give credit you were out there. Even if it does not the water and air will get warmer. Good luck I know how much it means to you to flyfish.

Thanks fellows, I'm sure I'll get the hang of the one eye thing. It will not deter my attempts to outsmart the trout and enjoy a truly wonderful activity.

A few weeks ago, I ran into an older fella down below the dam at the playhouse and chatted for a bit, then saw him again smoking a cigar on the bridge and we talked some more. Maybe that was you, if so, hope you're doing well.

Sorry to hear about your very bad day, done give up. Try and pick your spots where you can do some easy wading. That's what I've been doing the last few years.

I have found walking across the bridge near the pool and down the sewer easement an easy way to get to the upper c&r area when the water is up. The path is a alittle weedy at first but then opens up.

Supposedly, this eye thing will heal itself, but could take up to 3 or 4 months. I will be extra careful til then. It will not however keep me from the stream. I normally don't fish the Run, but my black Ranger's tag is "THE RUN". Hope to meet and greet everyone showing support. Once again, thanks fellows!
