Yellow Breeches Creek, Cumberland County, 04/07/2013

Started at the Messiah College area for a coupla hours, caddis and a few hendricksons on the water in the early afternoon. Turned a few using soft hackles. only a few rises. Stopped at McCormick Road on the way home and experienced a blizzard hatch of caddis with a pretty good hendricksons too. Fish were on the mayflies for an hour or so. I touched one but hooked and lost many and missed more. Need to sharpen the skills a little on holding onto those buggers.

A great start to dry fly season. Fun time!

Water temp was 55.6 degrees in both places.

A while back we had a thread on whether the hatches would run late or on time this year. Do these hatches, Hendricksons and caddis (Grannoms?) on the Breeches seem early, late or normal to you?

I drove around the college late Saturday afternoon but didn't fish. A lot of bait fisherman in the good spots.

A while back we had a thread on whether the hatches would run late or on time this year. Do these hatches, Hendricksons and caddis (Grannoms?) on the Breeches seem early, late or normal to you?

Last year on Penns I think it was good Friday (early April) we had similar hatch experience. So seems same as last year which was considerably early as many stated. So even though we had a cold (normal?) winter/early spring the last few weeks of warmer temps seem to have gotten the hatches back on track.

Likely we caught the end of them on Penns last year. Grannoms are still heavy on breeches as of today.

I have fished the Breeches for many years and believe they are on time. The last few years were very early. I used to keep track (journal) for almost 30 years but have recently discontinued the practice. Also Hendricksons disappeared from the Breeches for around 20 years. But lately they have been a very good hatch along with Grannoms. Also we used to get Callabatis hatches on Boilingsprings lake. They have all but disappeared. I can not believe draining the lake is a accepted practice on a yearly basis.

I was on the breeches last night in the Lisburn area. It was frustatingly slow until about 6:30 and then the grannoms and rising trout were everywhere. Let the games begin!
