Time Fished: 930am to Noon
Weather Conditions: 91 & Sunny
Water Conditions: 67 degrees, quite cloudy. I’d say the typical Yellow Breeches stain
Insects: Saw some Midges
Drove around and checked 4 locations (spec regs and open water) and settled on the lower end of the C&R since no one was parked there. I haven’t been here since Allenberry changed their parking policy so I had the false sense that I was getting away from the crowd by distancing myself from others. Well it apparently is easy to trek to the lower end from the top of the project via the right of way so the upper end seems to be the best parking option.
It took me a little while to find an open piece of stream but once I did there were occasional rises on the far bank in the shade. I put on a beetle, made the long cast and prayed there wasn’t too much drag on my fly, because it was too far for me to detect those slight unnatural movements that send trout back to the bottom. The trout only came to look at it once so the first cast had to be good.
On beetle style #1, I caught 1 very nice brown, lost another and caught 4 fallfish and a chub. On beetle style #2, I caught one decent trout, lost 2 and caught 1 fallfish.
A few kayakers and a large group of tubers came through but it didn’t disrupt the fish for long.
In the section I was in, there was deep water to wade (soaked the lower edge of my vest and I had to dry out 4 fly boxes). Also had to contend with sunken logs and big rocks. No real danger but just something to keep in mind since you could get soaked. I also tried a few other locations that had no hazards.
It was a tough day with no insects and bright sun. I think there are a lot of fish still here. Hopefully the weather won’t get too warm for too long.
