Yellow Breeches Creek (Allenberry) Cumberland, Co 8/8/2013

More rain in Bowling Springs then in Fairfield. Stream is up, fast and muddy, but I was there, so I fished. Worked the large pool, above the dam, from the bank, behind the stone wall. Arrived around 9:00 and got some strikes on a pheasant tail. Could not see anything and missed them. Tried various nymphs in various sizes (18 to 24) with no action. A couple of large fish were hitting something on top hard, but sporadically. No idea what it was. Gave up around noon.

I guy once told me, never go fishing with out a few Muddlers in your box...

I have them, but I never thought to try them above the dam in midge country. Couldn't hurt, so I'll try it next time I have those conditions. Thanks.

Anything big, sex dungeons, meal tickets, krakens, bunny leeches with sculpin helmet heads. Dont look for numbers though, just big fish, leave your 3wt at home, i carry my 6wt for these conditions. Dont look for numbers either personal best is 22" but i watched a friend bring 27" of solid wild brown back a few months ago...connect with something like this once its a real rush.

You all caught these fish in the Allenberry area? I had no idea there were any that large there.

No, i didnt say allenberry, but you wouldnt believe what can lurk in a stream you never see. Big fish hide and dont get big by being dumb. High water brings them out. Im not saying your going to catch a 27"of trout just anywhere either 🙂

High and muddy is a "go" for me on the Breeches if I can get away from the business. Big stuff for big fish. Sadly, the big fish at Allenberry are far and few between these days. Lots of 10" fish though. Jbewley, you were on the wrong side of the stream and too far down stream.

Couple more good ones is "Lefty's Deceiver" and Clouser Minnow. They can be tied in so many sizes and variations it's endless.

The stream was really up and rolling. To be honest, I wasn't real comfortable in trying the wade to the other side, so I just fished from the bank where I had some casting room. I'm sure I could have found a place, perhaps from the other end. Next time I'll approach the problem differently. Good advice here.
