Yellow Breeches, Boiling Spgs 12/27/08

Warm, cloudy day. All the rain pushed the Susquehanna up to 7' and the YB was up about a foot and slightly stained.
The C&R area, downstream from the Boiling Springs Lake, was up about 1/2"
Rather than the usual 8" deep, it was way up to 8 1/2"! Still crystal clear.
I was too lazy to park at Allenberry and walk down to the creek, so I went to the regular spot where everyone goes.
Lots of anglers, just like I remember. Only one fish was caught all afternoon. I stayed until dusk, but nada for me!!
I could see lots of trout in the shallow water.
People feed the trout bread from the bridge. The only guy that caught a trout used a "bread" fly. I told him "way to go"
He said "you have to match the hatch" The trout here are so used to getting fed bread, they won't hit a nymph.
I tried woolybuggers, drys, and nymphs down to #18.
I haven't been there for ten years, and I'll probably go back in ten years! Well maybe!!
It's a pretty creek, but not where I want to go trout fishing.

I broke the law and caught em with popcorn and a spinning rod in there when I was about 7. My aunt had no clue that fishing even had regulations, and I wasn't in the habit of reading signs at that age.

Those were the days.

Small world. Twenty years ago, I used to live in Carlisle.
That place used to be lures only...... both spin and fly!!
I also used a spin rod, but not popcorn........ Roostertails and worms!!
You're a little younger than I am, but twenty years ago you could catch lots of trout with flies. Mountain Creek was actually better than the Yellow Breeches was.
South on Rt 34 across from the "Deer Lodge" was a fishing paradise.
They wrecked it. Now it's a mud bottom snake ditch.
Twenty years ago, I think I remember seeing you at the Yellow Breeches.
A seven year old kid with popcorn on his snoopy pushbutton outfit!
I thought to myself "someday that kid will be a master flyfisherman"

The current regs on Yellow Breeches in "The Run" below the lake are artificial lures, catch and release. While most folks fishing The Run are FF guys, spin tackle with lures (must be barbless) are legal here. Trust me, you can still catch fish here on flies. Back in the 80s, the special reg section was FF only and the PFBC changed it to artificial lures only about 1989.
