Yellow Breeches at Allenberry, July 30,2014 Cumberland County

Fished the Breeches Wednesday evening with great conditions. Water lower and clear though, so wade slowly.
Saw lots of risers and a fair amount of bug activity. Olives were dancing on the water, but I was getting hits on a size 14 fire ant.
After 7pm fish appeared to be chasing emergers; however, I have yet to determine the fly. I suspect the emergers to be cahills because light colored mayflies were egg laying right before dusk. Caught a good number subsurface on "junk" files (San Juan worms, egg patterns). Caught a brook, a few rainbows and a brown. Too bad no pallies were around or else I might have had a grand slam. No signs of the white flies yet or hexes.

nice work. thats a big ant #14 - do you normally fish them that big, or is it just fire ants.

i'm asking becuase i fish #18's and never catch anything on them and they are a bugger to see on anything other flat water.

Size 16 is about the smallest I use, my eye sight isn't that great. Last week at Spring Creek I was using a size 14 black parachute and getting hits.

Something about the orange on the breeches that works well. There is a little orange spider that falls in the creek and I have seen the trout aggressively taking them after drifting a few feet.

I have had success on Dunbar and Yellow creek with the 14-16 size range also. Are you casting to rising fish or just blind casting? Part of it is looking for overhanging vegetation and insect activity. I used to love using the McMurray Ants when the balsa bodies were available.

kray, next time I go to the breeches I'll see if I can capture one of the critters. I don't think they were but on the other hand I don't remember the cahill hatch being heavy at Allenberry. The thing that has me perplexed is the hex hatch. They usually precede the white fly a few weeks before. I look for them in the air around 6:30 then they hit the water around sunset. I have not seen them yet.

I believe the bugs on the breeches now are Cahills. Quite yellow this year. Have you see. Any Trico activity in mornings?

Fished yesterday 8/15 at Allenberry from noon to around 5 pm.
On Tues-there was a lot of rain and could see water level dropped about a foot, and today (Thur) water was clear with air temp in 70's.
during day, saw some white fly's and as I was leaving, spoke with a gentleman who expected a hatch this evening.

I only caught a brownie (old reliable green weenie), missed a nice size one (rising-tossed a brown san juan worm) when my leader snapped and missed fish on elk hair caddis, orange shrimp bug, orange salmon egg and a couple others for which I don't recall I was using.

I only saw 2 or 3 fish rising all afternoon-very slow
I tried at least 20 patterns including all color combos of beaded headed nymhs, BWO's, black ant, copper john, black beetles and brown caddis.

Saw a theory that if water temp is rising, fish will hit better than the other way which I think was yesterday. However, I forgot to measure the water temp at all!
